Wild plants are important in terms of human nutrition and folk medicine in Turkey. Especially the ones collected from rural areas and sold in the market are rich sources of dietary fiber important for human health. In this study, the dietary fiber contents of 13 different plants consumed frequently were determined by enzymatic-gravimetric method. The lowest amounts of insoluble fiber was found ...
Phosphorus (P) accumulators used for phytoremediation vary in their potential to acquire P from different high P regimes. Growth and P accumulation in Polygonum hydropiper were both dependent on an increasing level of IHP (1-8 mM P) and on a prolonged growth period (3-9 weeks), and those of the mining ecotype (ME) were higher than the non-mining ecotype (NME). Biomass increments in root, stem, ...
Polygonum tinctorium Ait. (Polygonaceae) known as dyerís knotweed is an annual plant growing in the sandy and loamy soils of China, Japan and Eastern Russia, where it is cultivated for both industrial and pharmacological usage (1). Indigo one of its main constituents has been widely used in traditional chinese medicine, and also, as a natural dye, in the production of denim. Although its synthe...
A new stilbenoid (1) was isolated from the root extract of Polygonum multiflorum together with eight known constituents (2-9). The chemical structure of 1 was established as the 6''-O-monogalloyl ester of (E)-2,3,4',5-beta-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-beta-D-glucopyranoside based on physicochemical and spectroscopic analyses, particularly by NMR spectroscopic data, i.e., COSY, HMQC and HMBC. Compound...
Environmental stresses experienced by individual parents can influence offspring phenotypes in ways that enhance survival under similar conditions. Although such adaptive transgenerational plasticity is well documented, its transmission mechanisms are generally unknown. One possible mechanism is environmentally induced DNA methylation changes. We tested this hypothesis in the annual plant Polyg...

Rhein (4, 5-dihydroxyanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid) is a lipophilic anthraquinone extensively found in medicinal herbs, such as Rheum palmatum L., Cassia tora L., Polygonum multiflorum Thunb., and Aloe barbadensis Miller, which have been used medicinally in China for more than 1,000 years. Its biological activities related to human health are being explored actively. Emerging evidence suggest...
The new method of quercetin extraction from Polygonum hydropiper L. by subcritical water was developed. High performance liquid chromatography was used for identification and quantification of flavonoids in the extract. The new method is environmentally friendly and more effective (7.6-times) than traditional flavonoids extraction methods using expensive and toxic organic solvents.
The rapid spread of invasive plants makes their management increasingly difficult. Remote sensing offers a means of fast and efficient monitoring, but still the optimal methodologies remain to be defined. The seasonal dynamics and spectral characteristics of the target invasive species are important factors, since, at certain time of the vegetation season (e.g., at flowering or senescing), plan...
