We propose a method for partially discretizing a model of an agedependent population dynamics with an additional structure whose growth rate is age-dependent. We give theoretical conditions under which a second order accuracy arises. A priori estimates are obtained. The main result indicates that the sum of these errors converges and is of second order accuracy.

The ratio of males to females in a population is a meaningful characteristic of sexual species. The reason for this biological property to be available to the observers of nature seems to be a question never asked. Introducing the notion of historically adapted populations as global minimizers of maintenance cost functions, we propose a theoretical explanation for the reported stability of this...

We consider the XXX Bethe equation associated with integral dominant weights of a Kac-Moody algebra and introduce a generating procedure constructing new solutions starting from a given one. The family of all solutions constructed from a given one is called a population. We list properties of populations.

Stochastic models of closed populations predict eventual extinction with certainty. Consequently, their behavior is often characterized by the quasi-stationary state, i.e. the long-term distribution of population sizes conditional on non-extinction. In contrast, models which allow for immigration exhibit a regular stationary state. At the limit of a low immigration rate, a population is expecte...

This symposium explores the forefront of research on population dynamics of mammals by considering population density changes explicitly in the framework of the communities and ecoscapes in which they occur. This approach will not only help us to better understand population behavior, but also will serve to more effectively manage populations of economic and conservation concern. My contributio...

Determining the factors that influence migratory population abundance has been constrained by the inability to connect events in different periods of the annual cycle. Carry-over effects are events that occur in one season but influence individual success the following season and recent empirical evidence suggests that they may play an important role in migratory population dynamics. Using a lo...

The early life history 7 Abstract The relationship between the biomass of reproductively mature individuals (spawning stock) and the resulting offspring added to the population (recruitment), the stock–recruitment relationship, is a fundamental and challenging problem in all of population biology. The steepness of this relationship is commonly defined as the fraction of recruitment from an unfi...

Maintenance of sustainable wildlife populations is one of the primary purposes of wildlife management. Thus, it is important to monitor and manage population growth over time. Sensitivity analysis of the long-term (i.e., asymptotic) population growth rate to changes in the vital rates is commonly used in management to identify the vital rates that contribute most to population growth. Yet, dyna...

1. As plant invasions pose one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, it is critical to improve both our understanding of invasiveness and strategies for control. Much research into plant invasions and their management, including biological control, assumes strong demographic effects by natural enemies, including herbivores. However, the importance of natural enemies in the regulation of plan...
