Providing domain knowledge needed by intelligent tutoring systems to teach a procedure to students is traditionally a difficult and time consuming task. This paper presents a system for making this process easier by allowing the automated tutor to acquire the knowledge it needs through a combination of programming by demonstration, autonomous experimentation, and direct instruction.

Conceptualizing procedural knowledge is one of the most challenging tasks of building systems for intelligent tutoring. We present an algorithm that enables teachers to accomplish this task semi automatically. We used the algorithm on a difficult king, bishop, and knight versus the lone king (KBNK) chess endgame, and obtained concepts that could serve as textbook instructions. A pilot experimen...

Text mining is a popular methodology for building Technology Intelligence which helps companies or organizations to make better decisions by providing knowledge about the state-of-the-art technologies obtained from the Internet or inside companies. As a matter of fact, the objects or events (socalled declarative knowledge) are the target knowledge that text miners want to catch in general. Howe...

This paper describes sixth grade students’ performance in tasks related to arithmetic expressions in the context of a design experiment aimed at developing a principled approach to beginning symbolic algebra. This approach, which is centered on the concept of ‘term’, is described elsewhere. In the paper, students’ performance in two kinds of tasks over items that test procedural knowledge and i...

This study examined relations between children's conceptual understanding of mathematical equivalence and their procedures for solving equivalence problems (e.g., 3 + 4 + 5 = 3 + ). Students in 4th and 5th grades completed assessments of their conceptual and procedural knowledge of equivalence, both before and after a brief lesson. The instruction focused either on the concept of equivalence or...

The paper presents the results of the development of the knowledge base for the HEARTFAID platform. The means and methods used to collect, systematize and formalize medical knowledge, as well as to test the developed knowledge representation are described. The descriptive part of the knowledge base is realized as an ontology which conceptualizes the heart failure medical domain. The procedural ...

LEARNING PROCEDURAL PLANNING KNOWLEDGE IN COMPLEX ENVIRONMENTS by Douglas John Pearson Chair: John E. Laird In complex, dynamic environments, an agent's knowledge of the environment (its domain knowledge) will rarely be complete and correct. Existing approaches to learning and correcting domain knowledge have focused on either learning procedural knowledge to directly guide execution (e.g. rein...

Intelligent systems using conventional associative memory model learn the knowledge which is prepared in advance. Therefore they have poor adaptability to the environment different from what the knowledge assumes. In this study, we propose an associative memory model to acquire procedural knowledge sequentially from surroundings of the model. We carried out computer simulations and confirmed that...
