In this paper, we consider discontinuous Galerkin approximations to the solution of Naghdi arches and show how to post-process them in an element-by-element fashion to obtain a far better approximation. Indeed, we prove that, if polynomials of degree k are used, the postprocessed approximation converges with order 2k+1 in the L2-norm throughout the domain. This has to be contrasted with the fac...
In this paper we present a hardware realization of Kohonen's selforganizing feature map as a neural coprocessor connected to a personal computer (PC). We compare two concepts for this coprocessor, a vector-component-serial and processing-element-parallel array processor and a vector-component-parallel and processing-element-serial vector processor. Finally we give an overview about the whole sy...
We examine a traffic overload control scheme which has been designed to meet the demands of a loosely coupled, fully disributed switching architecture. In the architecture considered, each module in the system is identical and consists of a processing element and associated port boards. Each processing element monitors its own congestion and periodically adjusts its own control levels, independ...
Developing a high performance platform for large-scale, high-intensity data processing is a priority for researching cost-effective parallel finite element methods (FEM). This paper introduces an efficient MapReduce-MPI based strategy for parallel 3D finite element mesh processing, demonstrates the potential benefits of this approach for optimally utilizing system resources. Preliminary experim...
Fixed-point simulation results are used for the performance measure of inverting matrices by Cholesky decomposition. The fixed-point Cholesky decomposition algorithm is implemented using a fixed-point reconfigurable processing element. The reconfigurable processing element provides all mathematical operations required by Cholesky decomposition. The fixed-point word length analysis is based on s...
the effect of the presence of perforations on he stresses of a plate is a problem which is of great interest in structural design and in the mathemattical theory of elasticity. among the many hole patterns that are likely to require consideration is the ring of equally spaced circular holes. the present worke investigates stress & strain analysis of a thin isotropic circular plate containing a ...
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes have been widely used in the microfluidic community to achieve various functions such as control, sensing, filter, etc. In this paper, an experimental process was proposed to directly characterize the deformation of the on-chip PDMS membrane at large deformation based on the image processing method. High precision pressures were applied on the surface of th...
We show that scattering matrix calculations for dipole modes between 23-43 GHz for the 206 cell detuned structure (DS) are consistent with finite element calculations and results of the uncoupled model. In particular, the rms sum wake for these bands is comparable to that of the first dipole band. We also show that for RDDS1 uncoupled wakefield calculations for higher bands are consistent with ...
With the introduction of comprehensive electronic medical records, all aspects of patient history and care can now be captured in both structured and free-text format. As part of a quality improvement (QI) project conducted at University of Washington (UW), we work on automating the abstraction of various types of data elements including smoking status by using natural language processing and m...
A new finite element based method for fatigue life prediction has been examined. The method uses nodal forces and moments along the weld toe to define a structural stress perpendicular to the weld. The method was found to be less mesh-sensitive than ordinarie post-processing.
