L-proline is more completely catabolized by Leishmania tarentolae and Trypanosoma scelopori than by L. donovani. In the two former organisms the activity of 14CO2 derived from L-proline-14C was as high or higher than that derived from D-glucose-14C; in L. donovani more 14CO2 is derived from D-glucose-14C than from L-proline-14C. Addition of unlabeled D-glucose to cells incubated with L-proline-...

of connective tissue, and concomitant disorganization of its structure. The most abundant connective proteins are members of the collagen family, with more than 20 different collagen types identified to date. Collagen makes up 70—80% of the dry weight of the skin, and contributes to the stability and structural integrity of tissues. A number of additional functional roles are carried out by add...

BACKGROUND Understanding the metabolism of the microbial host is essential for the development and optimization of whole-cell based biocatalytic processes, as it dictates production efficiency. This is especially true for redox biocatalysis where metabolically active cells are employed because of the cofactor/cosubstrate regenerative capacity endogenous in the host. Recombinant Escherichia coli...

The effect of the Astragalus membranaceus root (AMR) on serum metabolic profiles preweaning calf were investigated in this study. Sixteen Holstein calves randomly allocated into two groups with eight per group, and offered a control basal diet (CON group) or supplemented 20 g superfine powder AMR (AMR for 14 day. Serum samples collected from day 0, 7 14. albumin, globulin, total protein, glucos...

Excised bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) leaves were used to measure changes in proline content and proline metabolism during rehydration in the dark after the leaves had been incubated in the dark 24 hours in a wilted condition. The increase in nonprotein proline which occurs in wilted leaves stopped immediately upon rehydration, and thereafter levels of proline declined. The rate of decline and the f...

UNLABELLED Many processes are deregulated in melanoma cells and one of those is protein production. Although much is known about protein synthesis in cancer cells, effective ways of therapeutically targeting this process remain an understudied area of research. A process that is upregulated in melanoma compared with normal melanocytes is proline biosynthesis, which has been linked to both oncog...

Over the past three decades, L-proline has become recognized as an important metabolite for trypanosomatids. It is involved in a number of key processes, including energy metabolism, resistance to oxidative and nutritional stress and osmoregulation. In addition, this amino acid supports critical parasite life cycle processes by acting as an energy source, thus enabling host-cell invasion by the...

Radioisotopic assays have been developed for the enzymes of proline metabolism. These assays are specific and sensitive enough to measure enzyme activities in cultured cells and biopsy specimens. Measurements of these enzymes in tissues and cultured cells suggest that endogenous biosynthesis of proline may be an important source of this amino acid.

Expression analysis of crop plants has improved our knowledge about the veiled underlying mechanisms for salt tolerance. In order to observe the time course effects of salinity stress on gene expression for enzymes regulating proline metabolism, we comparatively analyzed the expression of specific genes for proline metabolism in root and shoot tissues of salt-tolerant (cv. Dunkled) and salt-sen...
