this thesis attempts to investigate the effects of prelistening activities on enhancing iranian efl learners` listening comprehension. the present study investigated ways in which learners` background knowledge could be activated in order to enhance their l2 listening comprehension by limiting the number of possible text interpretations prior to listening. the experiments conducted in this study examined the effect of prior knowledge and vocabulary teaching on iranian efl learners listening comprehension. the current study has two purposes: one is to investigate the effect of background knowledge on the second language listening comprehension of iranian intermediates and the other is to determine whether second language is facilitated by the introduction of unknown vocabularies in the form of prelistening activities. to conduct the study different instruments such as listening proficiency test and four listening tests such as pre and posttests were used and various statistical processes and techniques including paired-sample t-test, and analysis of variance (anova) were used. the findings of this study supported all three hypotheses tested. differences were found between the means of preteaching vocabulary variable, the background knowledge activation variable, and mean difference between these two strategies variable. subjects scored higher when the unknown words were taught in advance. likewise, subjects scored higher when they were asked some relevant questions about the topic than on those without them. there was, in addition, a significant difference between the means of preteaching vocabulary strategy and background knowledge activation strategy. in fact, preteaching vocabulary had a better effect in enhancing the students’ listening comprehension, in comparison to background knowledge activation strategy.

The CCAAT enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) family of transcription factors is implicated in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation in a variety of tissues. C/EBPd is involved in regulating G0 growth arrest and apoptosis of mouse mammary epithelial cells. This study shows that activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3), but not activation of Stat1 ...

Thyroid hormone receptor (TR) can act as both a transcriptional activator and a silencer. Optimal activation by TR requires synergism with activator(s) bound to the promoter (promoter proximal activator). It is thought that liganded TR either helps to recruit preinitiation complexes (PIC) to the promoter or activates the PIC already recruited. However, the studies analyzing the TR action on the...

We present evidence that the fos oncogene encodes a transcriptional trans-activation function. trans-activation was assayed by cotransfection into NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblasts of v-fos DNA containing plasmids together with a plasmid containing a test promoter. Three v-fos DNAs were used: (i) pFBR-1, a plasmid containing the FBR proviral sequences; (ii) pFBJ-2, a plasmid harboring the FBJ proviral ...

Eukaryotic transcriptional activators have been proposed to function, for the most part, by promoting the assembly of preinitiation complex through the recruitment of the RNA polymerase II transcriptional machinery to the promoter. Previous studies have shown that transcriptional activation is critically dependent on transcription factor IIH (TFIIH), which functions during promoter opening and ...

Candida albicans expresses specific virulence traits that promote disease establishment and progression. These traits include morphological transitions between yeast and hyphal growth forms that are thought to contribute to dissemination and invasion and cell surface adhesins that promote attachment to the host. Here, we describe the regulation of the adhesin gene ALS3, which is expressed speci...

We previously reported two oncogenic point mutations present in the RB (retinoblastoma) gene promoter region, found at consensus Sp1 and ATF sites, respectively, and in two separate hereditary RB families. However, Sp1 protein was shown not to bind to the Sp1 site; this indicated that the Sp1 consensus site mutation was blocking the action of an alternative transcription factor, which we called...

The c-myb proto-oncogene product (c-Myb) can transactivate the human hsp70 promoter in a transient cotransfection assay. The present studies have demonstrated that the heat shock element (HSE) in the hsp70 promoter mediates trans-activation by c-Myb. Mutagenesis of the DNA sequence in HSE indicated that the NGAAN motif is necessary for not only the heat shock response but also the c-Myb-induced...

Background: Epigenetic aberration such as DNA methylation and histone modifications appear to be involved in various diseases such as Endometriosis. Here, we investigated the epigenetic regulation of HOXA10 promoter, as a crucial gene, responsible for uterine organogenesis, functional endometrial differentiation and endometrial receptivity, and its correlation with mRNA expression of this gene ...
