Chylothorax is an abnormal condition of lymphatic fluid collection in the pleural space, and the somatostatin analog octreotide is thought to have a beneficial effect on chylothorax. However, the octreotide dosage and administration route for chylothorax have been inconsistent to date. We report three neonatal cases of persistent chylothorax successfully treated with high-dose octreotide infusi...

BACKGROUND Unilateral postoperative pulmonary edema is an underreported adverse event after a minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedure that combines right minithoracotomy with cardiopulmonary bypass. We sought to characterize its incidence, risk factors, and morbidity. METHODS We conducted a retrospective case-control study of all cardiac surgical procedures that combined right-sided min...

In children, chylothorax occurs mainly after cardiac and thoracic surgeries. One of the recommended postsurgery treatments is ligation of the thoracic tract, when all other conservative treatments have failed. We report 4 cases of chylothorax in patients who were successfully treated with this approach, which resulted in a decrease in pleural drainage without recurrent chylothorax.

BACKGROUND Chylothorax in children is a relatively rare cause of pleural effusion. However, it is usually a common complication of cardiothoracic operations like open-heart surgery. Other etiologies for chylothorax, such as trauma or malignancy, occur more common in adults and rare in children. To explore the etiologies of chylothorax in children, this study analyzed the pediatric patients that...

As previous studies have revealed, postoperative chylothorax is a rare complication of cardiothoracic surgery procedures, especially myocardial revascularization [1–4]. It occurs in less than 1% of thoracic procedures [5] and 0.6%–0.8% of cases of cardiovascular surgery [6]. We describe a case of chylothorax that occurred a few days after coronary artery bypass grafting and which was treated on...

Chylothorax refers to the accumulation of chyle in the pleural cavity. Although rare, it is the most frequent cause of pleural effusion in the neonatal period. Its incidence is estimated at one in 15,000 neonates. The causes of chylothorax are multiple, and there are several major types of chylothorax defined by origin, ie, traumatic (and iatrogenic) chylothorax, medical (spontaneous) chylothor...

Chylothorax is a serious complication of congenital cardiac surgery and is significantly associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Central venous obstruction, which is often related to the insertion of central venous catheters for postoperative management, is known to be an important risk factor for treatment failure and mortality associated with this condition. We present the case of ...
