We show that any weak ranker that can achieve an area under the ROC curve slightly better than 1/2 (which can be achieved by random guessing) can be efficiently boosted to achieve an area under the ROC curve arbitrarily close to 1. We further show that this boosting can be performed even in the presence of independent misclassification noise, given access to a noise-tolerant weak ranker.
This paper theoretically and experimentally investigates the behavior of asymmetric players in guessing games. The asymmetry is created by introducing $$r>1$$ replicas one players. Two-player restricted N-player cases are examined detail. Based on model parameters, equilibrium either unique which all choose zero or mixed weak player ( $$r=1$$ ) imitates strong ). A series experiments involving ...
It is possible to control to a large extent, via semiproper forcing, the parameters (β0, β1) measuring the guessing density of the members of any given antichain of stationary subsets of ω1 (assuming the existence of an inaccessible limit of measurable cardinals). Here, given a pair (β0, β1) of ordinals, we will say that a stationary set S ⊆ ω1 has guessing density (β0, β1) if β0 = γ(S) and β1 ...
Introduction: Guessing is one of the most challenging issues in multiple choice questions. Several strategies, such as negative scoring, have been suggested for preventing students from choosing the right answer just by chance. However, there is no general agreement on using such strategies. The aim of this study was to review the scoring methods which are used for reducing guessing, and evalua...
Let (X, Y) be a pair of discrete random variables with X taking one of M possible values. Suppose the value of X is to be determined, given the value of Y, by asking questions of the form “Is X equal to z?” until the answer is “Yes.” Let G(z 1 y) denote the number of guesses in any such guessing scheme when X = x, Y = y. We prove that
BACKGROUND Verbal autopsy is gaining increasing acceptance as a method for determining the underlying cause of death when the cause of death given on death certificates is unavailable or unreliable, and there are now a number of alternative approaches for mapping from verbal autopsy interviews to the underlying cause of death. For public health applications, the population-level aggregates of t...
In 2015, Zheng et al. proposed an efficient protocol for two-party explicit authenticated key agreement(2EAKA). Zheng et al. claimed that their proposed 2EAKA protocol does not need any fixed public key infrastructure and is provably secure in the random oracle under the Computation Gap Diffie-Hellman assumption. However, this paper points out that Zheng et al.’s 2EAKA protocol still suffers fr...
Analyzing the tables and probability maps posted by Yan Y. Kagan and David D. Jackson in April 2002–September 2004 at http://scec.ess.ucla.edu/~ykagan/predictions_index.html and the catalog of earthquakes for the same period, the conclusion is drawn that the underlying method could be used for prediction of aftershocks, while it does not outscore random guessing when main shocks are considered....
