This article extends a recently proposed heterogeneous data assimilation technique for site characterization to estimate compression and shear wave velocity ( V p s , respectively) damping at Treasure Island Delaney Park downhole arrays. The adopted method is based on the joint inversion of earthquake acceleration time series experimental surface dispersion includes physical constraints improve...

Numerical models based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method have been developed to simulate thermal noise and spontaneous emission. Both types of noise may have effects on optical systems. Though their origin lies in quantum mechanics, macroscopic systems in which the discreteness of light can be ignored make it possible to simulate the noise using classical numbers. The absorbing...

One of the most important design goals in a real-time system is to guarantee that all tasks can finish their work before reaching deadline. However, the sequence of resource allocation among tasks of different priorities may result in a severe priority inversion problem such that a high priority task will violate its deadline requirement. Although previous solutions can shorten the latency resu...

The magnetotelluric (MT) method has become more widely used in hydrocarbon exploration. The inversion of MT data, which can determine the electrical structure of subsurface, is a nonlinear and multimodal optimization problem. Particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm is a good solver for this geophysical inversion problem, whereas it has a shortage of heavy computation time. An improved parall...

Fluid flow in the vadose zone is governed by Richards equation; it is parameterized by hydraulic conductivity, which is a nonlinear function of pressure head. Investigations in the vadose zone typically require characterizing distributed hydraulic properties. Saturation or pressure head data may include direct measurements made from boreholes. Increasingly, proxy measurements from hydrogeophysi...

A simple and mild wet-chemical approach was developed for the synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) In(OH)(3) nanostructures. By calcining the 1D In(OH)(3) nanocrystals in air at 250 degrees C, 1D In(2)O(3) nanocrystals with the same morphology were obtained. TEM results show that both 1D In(OH)(3) and 1D In(2)O(3) are composed of uniform nanotube bundles. SAED and XRD patterns indicate that 1D In(...

A child with developmental and language delay was found to be homozygous for a pericentric inversion of chromosome 4 (inv(4) (p15 X 2q12)). Her normal mother and aunt are inversion heterozygotes. It is suggested that the phenotypic abnormalities may have resulted from damage at chromosomal breakpoints or from a position effect which is expressed only in homozygous form.

We present an ARPES study of the surface states of Ru2Sn3, a new type of a strong 3D topological insulator (TI). In contrast to currently known 3D TIs, which display two-dimensional Dirac cones with linear isotropic dispersions crossing through one point in the surface Brillouin Zone (SBZ), the surface states on Ru2Sn3 are highly anisotropic, displaying an almost flat dispersion along certain h...
