The threshold amplitude for subcritical transition in Poiseuille and Couette ows is investigated. For Poiseuille ow we present examples where the threshold scales like R ?7=4 for 1500 R 5000, where R is the Reynolds number. In this paper we construct the solution of the Dirichlet problem for a mono-dimensional compressible Reynolds equation and we prove its uniqueness. The solution is smooth, if the total mass of the fluid is sufficiently large, but it is not regular if the total mass is insufficient. The reason for such deterioration of the solution is vacuum that appears in part of the domain.
