Recently the metabolic cost of swinging the limbs has been found to be much greater than previously thought, raising the possibility that limb rotational inertia influences the energetics of locomotion. Larger mammals have a lower mass-specific cost of transport than smaller mammals. The scaling of the mass-specific cost of transport is partly explained by decreasing stride frequency with incre...

Introduction Analysis of Doppler tracking data and radar images from the Cassini spacecraft have recently provided estimates of the low degree gravity field [1], and spin pole direction [2] of Titan. We examine implications of these measurements for the internal structure and rotational dynamics of that body. We derive separate estimates of the polar moment of inertia of Titan from the degree t...

Many models of three-dimensional rigid body dynamics employ Euler parameters as rotational coordinates. Since the four Euler parameters are not independent, one has to consider the quaternion constraint in the equations of motion. This is usually done by the Lagrange multiplier technique. In the present paper, various forms of the rotational equations of motion will be derived, and it will be s...

We design a stabilizing linear boundary feedback control for a one-link flexible manipulator with rotational inertia. The system is modelled as a Rayleigh beam rotating around one endpoint, with the torque at this endpoint as the control input. The closed-loop system is nondissipative, so that its well posedness is not easy to establish. We study the asymptotic properties of the eigenvalues and...

Let G be one of the three-dimensional compact simple Lie groups SU(2) or SO(3). The Laplace-Beltrami spectrum is shown to mutually distinguish isometry classes of left-invaraint metrics on G. Consequently, the rotational spectrum of a molecule determines its moments of inertia.

In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic measurements have been made on 253/102No. A single rotational band was identified up to a probable spin of 39/2planck, which is assigned to the 7/2(+)[624] Nilsson configuration. The bandhead energy and the moment of inertia provide discriminating tests of contemporary models of the heaviest nuclei. Novel methods were required to interpret the sparse data set ass...

The ground state rotational bands of the N = Z nuclei (72)Kr, (76)Sr, and (80)Zr have been extended into the angular momentum region where rotation alignment of particles is normally expected. By measuring the moments of inertia of these bands we have observed a consistent increase in the rotational frequency required to start pair breaking, when compared to neighboring nuclei. (72)Kr shows the...

Rotational spectra have been measured for six isotopomers of the dimethylamine dimer using a Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer. No tunneling splittings were observed for either the aor c-type rotational transitions and the spectra could be fit to a rigid rotor Hamiltonian including centrifugal distortion terms. Possible dimer structures are discussed and compared to the experimentally de...

This paper addresses the problem of the separation of rotational and internal motion. It introduces the concept of average angular velocity as the moment of inertia weighted average of particle angular velocities. It extends and elucidates the concept of Jellinek and Li (1989) of separation of the energy of overall rotation in an arbitrary (non-linear) N -particle system. It generalizes the so ...

Time-odd mean fields in the rotating frame: microscopic nature of nuclear magnetism. Abstract The microscopic role of nuclear magnetism in rotating frame is investigated for the first time in the framework of the cranked relativistic mean field theory. It is shown that nuclear magnetism modifies the expectation values of single-particle spin, orbital and total angular momenta along the rotation...
