Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is considered as a highly curable malignancy, but successful treatment can be associated with significant long-term toxicity [1]. Traditional treatment modalities include chemotherapy, radiotherapy (RT) and salvage chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). The goal of modern treatment is focused on tailoring each patient’s approach according to age, ri...
We report a 45 year-old woman who had bilateral breast masses with extradural involvement. Pathologic report revealed malignant high-grade lymphoblastic lymphoma. Systemic chemotherapy was performed but 3 months later, lesions indicating relapse in bone and breast re-appeared. She received salvage chemotherapy, but 4 months after that she was expired.
Sertoli-Leydig tumors tend to relapse early and due to their rarity, limited data are available regarding a role of chemotherapy in the management of Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors. We present a case of recurrent ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor whose salvage treatment was successful with paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy.
Testicular cancer is a highly curable cancer. However, 30% of patients are refractory to standard therapy and will need additional therapy. This article focuses on the use of high-dose chemotherapy in germ-cell tumors. High-dose chemotherapy use is discussed both in the refractory setting and as either first-salvage or first-line therapy. Various criteria for risk assessment are also discussed.
The limited sensitivity of the historical treatment response criteria for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has resulted in a different paradigm for treatment compared with most other cancers presenting with widely disseminated disease. Initial cytotoxic induction chemotherapy is often able to reduce tumor burden to a level sufficient to meet the current criteria for "complete" remission. Neverthele...
The outcome of treatment for a first relapse of Hodgkin's disease after primary chemotherapy was analyzed in 80 patients. They were divided into four groups: group 1 (n = 24) had initially been treated with three cycles of (mechlorethamine, vincristine, prednisone, and procarbazine [MOPP]) and wide-field irradiation therapy; group 2 (n = 25) had six cycles of MOPP; group 3 (n = 15) and group 4 ...
A 32-year-old woman named A.C. was diagnosed five years ago with stage IIIB nodular sclerosing Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). Following initial chemotherapy, she had refractory disease as evidenced by hypermetabolic activity on positron-emission tomography (PET) scan. A.C. was treated with a short course of salvage chemotherapy, stem cell collection, and autologous HSCT about 11 months after initial di...
background: osteosarcoma is the most common bone sarcoma, and the third most common malignancy in children and adolescents. before 1970, amputation was the sole treatment. eighty percent of patients died from metastatic diseases, most commonly in the lungs. over the past three decades, effective neoadjuvant (preoperative) and adjuvant (postoperative) chemotherapy protocols have improved the abi...
Although core-binding factor-acute myeloid leukemia (CBF-AML) (t[8;21] or inv[16]/t[16;16]) represents a favorable cytogenetic AML subgroup, 30% to 40% of these patients relapse after standard intensive chemotherapy. The encouraging results of gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) in newly diagnosed AML, and particularly in CBF-AML, incited us to retrospectively investigate the impact of GO-based salvage ...
The survival of two cohorts of patients with stage III/IV large-cell lymphomas treated by CHOP has been compared. In the first cohort of 88 patients (1974-1982), high-dose therapy with autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) was not available as salvage therapy and in the second cohort of 87 patients (1987-1992), this was the recommended salvage for patients with disease that was still ch...
