Darcy's Law is one of the most essential concepts in hydrogeology. Before moving on to more complex problems, students must first thoroughly understand the basic principles of one-dimensional fluid flow through saturated porous media that are embodied in Darcy’s Law. We believe that the best way for students to learn these principles is through experimentation. In this paper, we introduce an ex...

Utility of the Worldview2 (WV2) sensor was examined for mapping and quantifying submerged aquatic habitats along the Florida Gulf Coast. Benthic types ranged from bare sand to dense seagrass. Satellite imagery was atmospherically calibrated using coincident ground based measurements of Rrs. Sand and seagrass were distinguished by brightness in the green (510 to 580 nm) band. Bottom reflectance ...

We investigated the effect of different flow conditions on the transport of bacteriophage phiX174 in Memphis aquifer sand. Virus transport associated with a wetting front moving into an initially unsaturated horizontal sand column was experimentally compared with that observed under steady-state saturated vertical flow. Results obtained by sectioning the sand columns showthattotal (retained and...

AIMS Research into the relationship between pathogens, faecal indicator microbes and environmental factors in beach sand has been limited, yet vital to the understanding of the microbial relationship between sand and the water column and to the improvement of criteria for better human health protection at beaches. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the presence and distribution of pa...

Propachlor and other chloroacetanilide herbicides are frequently detected contaminants of groundwater and surface water in agricultural regions. The purpose of this work was to develop a new approach to remove propachlor residues from the environment via chemical remediation by the nitrification inhibitor thiourea. The transformation processes of propachlor and thiourea mixed in aqueous solutio...

Sand Pile Models are discrete dynamical systems emphasizing the phenomenon of Self-Organized Criticality. From a configuration composed of a finite number of stacked grains, we apply on every possible positions (in parallel) two grain moving transition rules. The transition rules permit one grain to fall to its right or left (symmetric) neighboring column if the difference of height between tho...

The rate of ejection of alpha-recoil thorium-234 into solution from the surface of zircon sand gives an alpha-recoil range of 550 angstroms. The alpha-recoil thorium-234 atoms ejected into the groundwater may supply excess uranium-234. In pelagic sediments, ejected alpha-recoil thorium-234 may contribute to the supply of mobile uranium-234 in the sedimentary column.
