The purpose of this paper is to enable a developer to easily employ external sensors emitting a onedimensional signal for flexible robot manipulation. To achieve this, the sensor must be calibrated using data tuples describing the relation between the positional change of the supervised object and the resulting sensor value. This information is used for adaptation methods, thus enabling robots ...

Based on the evaluation at t = −1 of the generating polynomial for the hyperoctahedral group by the number of descents, an observation recently made by Hirzebruch, a new q-secant number is derived by working with the Chow-Gessel q-polynomial involving the flag major index. Using the doubloon combinatorial model we show that this new q-secant number is a polynomial with positive integral coeffic...

We introduce an algorithm for calculating, offline or in real time and with no explicit system characterization, the feedforward input required for repetitive motions of a system. The algorithm is based on the secant method of numerical analysis and gives accurate motion at frequencies limited only by the signal-to-noise ratio and the actuator power and range. We illustrate the secant-solver al...

Conjugate gradient methods have been paid attention to, because they can be directly applied to large-scale unconstrained optimization problems. In order to incorporate second order information of the objective function into conjugate gradient methods, Dai and Liao (2001) proposed a conjugate gradient method based on the secant condition. However, their method does not necessarily generate a de...

The purpose of this paper is to relate the variety parameterizing completely decomposable homogeneous polynomials of degree d in n+1 variables on an algebraically closed field, called Splitd(P ), with the Grassmannian of n−1 dimensional projective subspaces of P. We compute the dimension of some secant varieties to Splitd(P ) and find a counterexample to a conjecture that wanted its dimension r...

For a smooth curve of genus g embedded by a line bundle of degree at least 2g + 3 we show that the ideal sheaf of the secant variety is 5-regular. This bound is sharp with respect to both the degree of the embedding and the bound on the regularity. Further, we show that the secant variety is projectively normal for the generic embedding of degree at least 2g + 3. AMS Subject Classification (200...
