An all-optical AND gate based on optically induced nonlinear polarization rotation of a probe light in a bulk semiconductor optical amplifier is realized at a bit rate of 2.5Gbit/s. By operating the AND gate in an up and inverted wavelength conversion scheme, the extinction ratio is improved by 8dB compared with previously published work.
We present an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser that uses a single active semiconductor optical amplifier device to provide both gain and gain modulation from an external optical pulse train. The laser source generated 4.3-ps pulses at 20 GHz over a 16-nm tuning range and is stable against environmental changes and simple to build.

Higher data throughput in optical packet switched interconnection networks can be achieved by minimizing the guard times through faster transition of the switching element. A hybrid integration of a semiconductor optical amplifier with its current driver is presented, which exhibits over 40 % faster transition time compared to current commercial devices.
We present an all-optical label processor based on selfpolarization rotation in a semiconductor optical amplifier. The operation principle is experimentally demonstrated.
