1. Quantitative scintigraphic and turnover studies, utilizing the specific binding affinity of serum amyloid P component for amyloid fibrils, have been developed as a tool for evaluating amyloid deposits in vivo. 2. Serial studies in over 300 patients have shown characteristic, diagnostic tissue distributions of amyloid in different types of amyloidosis. There is generally a poor correlation be...
Serum amyloid A concentrations were determined in serial serum samples of 41 patients with confirmed acute myocardial infarction (10 with acute ischaemia and two with myocarditis). A sharp increase in serum amyloid A concentration was observed early at onset of infarct; it peaked on the third day (up to 2200 fold of normal values) and declined towards normal during the following days, if no com...
Passive immunotherapy using fibril-reactive mAbs has been shown experimentally to reduce amyloid formation and also accelerate amyloidolysis. We now report that human sera, as well as various sources of pooled human IgG, including pharmacologic formulations of immune globulin i.v. (IGIV), contain Abs that specifically recognize fibrils formed from light chains and other amyloidogenic precursor ...
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in the serum concentrations of haptoglobin (Hp), serum amyloid A (SAA) and IgG, IgA in calves with diarrhea caused by rotavirus, coronavirus, Escherichia coli F5 and Eimeria species. The experiment was carried out on 40 diarrhoeic and 10 non-diarrhoeic calves (group C). A total of 13 calves were infected with rotavirus or coronavirus (group ...
AIMS Circulating levels of C-reactive protein and serum amyloid A protein increase markedly, and albumin levels fall, during the acute-phase response to tissue injury, infection and inflammation. Some acute-phase proteins have been associated with increased risks of coronary heart disease in long-term prospective studies. The aim of the present study was to determine whether circulating concent...
The deposits of fibrils found in amyloidosis of the A type are derived from only one of the three serum amyloid A (SAA) gene products, namely SAA2. In order to explore the mechanism of SAA isotype-specific amyloid protein AA deposition, the molecular kinetics of the serum amyloid proteins were examined in CBA mice during casein induction of amyloidosis. The presence of SAA mRNA in spleen was se...
Amyloidosis is one of the major causes of nephrotic syndrome in adults, mainly in older patients. It is caused by the accumulation of amyloid fibrils in the extracellular tissue and while there are several types of amyloid fibrils, serum amyloid A protein has been associated with chronic inflammatory diseases. The AA type of amyloidosis usually presents with proteinuria followed by renal failure.
