Using Monte Carlo simulations and free energy calculations, we study the phase behavior of hard asymmetric dumbbell particles with a constituent sphere diameter ratio of 0.5. We find a rich phase behavior with isotropic fluid, rotator, and periodic NaCl-based and both periodic and aperiodic CrB-based crystalline phases. The rotator phases found to be stable in this study are similar to those fo...

1. ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Passive and active microwave remote sensing of cold-cloud precipitation requires accurate knowledge of not only the physical state of the scene being observed, but also the relationship between that physical state and the radiation being observed. However, for ice-phase precipitation and cloud particles, this relationship remains poorly understood due primarily to a lac...

Developing particles of various geometric anisotropic shapes are the hot topic since decades as they guarantee some special features of properties not possible through other means. Again, controlling atoms to develop certain size and shape particle is a quite challenging job. In this study, gold particles of different shapes are developed via pulse-based electronphoton-solution interface proces...

Multiarm hydrogel microparticles with varying geometry are fabricated to specifically capture cells expressing epithelial cell adhesion molecule. Results show that particle shape influences cell-capture efficiency due to differences in surface area, hydrodynamic effects, and steric constraints. These findings can lead to improved particle design for cell separation and diagnostic applications.

Self-propelled rods, which propel by themselves in the direction from the tail to the head and align nematically through collision, have been well-investigated theoretically. Various phenomena including true long-range ordered phase with the Giant number fluctuations, and the collective motion composed of many vorices were predicted using the minimal mathematical models of self-propelled rods. ...

We study the phase behavior of bowl-shaped particles using computer simulations. These particles were found experimentally to form a metastable wormlike fluid phase in which the bowl-shaped particles have a strong tendency to stack on top of each other [M. Marechal, Nano Lett. 10, 1907 (2010)]. In this work, we show that the transition from the low-density fluid to the wormlike phase has an int...

Optical trapping can manipulate the three-dimensional (3D) motion of spherical particles based on the simple prediction of optical forces and the responding motion of samples. However, controlling the 3D behaviour of non-spherical particles with arbitrary orientations is extremely challenging, due to experimental difficulties and extensive computations. Here, we achieve the real-time optical co...
