We analyze generation of phonons in tunneling structures with two electron states coupled by electron-phonon interaction. The conditions of strong vibration excitations are determined and dependence of non-equilibrium phonon occupation numbers on the applied bias is found. For high vibration excitation levels self consistent theory for the tunneling transport is presented. Tunneling current ind...

We investigate tunneling through a short wire with electron-electron interactions which is coupled to noninteracting leads. We identify two temperature regimes (a) TKondo < T ≤ Twire = h̄vF /kBd (d is the length of the interacting wire) and (b) T < TKondo ≪ Twire. In the first regime the effective (renormalized) electron-electron interaction is smaller than the tunneling matrix element. In this ...

A DNA molecule was utilized as a probe tip to achieve single-molecule genetic diagnoses. Hybridization of the probe and target DNAs resulted in electron tunneling along the emergent double-stranded DNA. Simple stationary monitoring of the tunneling current leads to single-molecule DNA detection and discovery of base mismatches and methylation.

In this paper we investigate single electron tunneling (SET) devices from the logic design perspective, using the SET tunnel junction’s ability to control the transport of individual electrons. More in particular, we investigate the behavior of a family of single electron encoded logic (SEEL) gates, consisting of a 2-input AND gate, a 2-input OR gate and a NOT gate, and simulate the gates. A ch...

We investigated the transmission probability of a single electron transmission through a quantum ring device based on the single-band effective mass approximation method and transfer matrix theory. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is applied on a Gaussian wave packet passing through the quantum ring system. The electron tunneling resonance peaks split when the electron transmits through ...
