We present a case of oral myiasis in a 15-year-old boy with tuberculosis meningitis. The diagnosis was based on the visual presence of wriggling larvae about 1 cm in size and on the microscopic features of the maggots, especially those relating to stigmatic structures. The larvae were identified as third-stage larvae of Sarcophaga sp.
Objective Paracrine disruption of growth factors in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome results in production of low quality oocyte, especially following ovulation induction. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of metformin (MET), N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and their combination on the hormonal levels and expression profile of GDF-9, BMP-15 and c-Kit, as hallmarks of oocyte qual...
Second-stage larvae of Meloidodera floridensis kept in tap water developed without feeding into small, slender males. They completed three molts, and the molted cuticles remained superimposed. All organ systems were well developed in third- and fourth-stage male larvae. Structures in the head region such as cephalic framework, styler and esophagus were smaller and differed morphologically from ...
The Caenorhabditis elegans vulval precursor cells (VPCs) offer a paradigm for investigating how multipotency of progenitor cells is maintained during periods of quiescence. The VPCs are born in the first larval stage. When hermaphrodites are grown under favorable conditions, the EGF-mediated "inductive" signal and the LIN-12/Notch-mediated "lateral" signal confer a precise spatial pattern of di...
Previous studies indicated that inorganic pyrophosphatase of Ascaris suum (AsPPase) plays an important role in larval survival in the host. Here we describe a precise role for AsPPase in larval molting and development and also describe the potential role of recombinant AsPPase (rAsPPase) in protective immunity to A. suum infection. Using reverse transcriptase PCR analysis, we found that disrupt...
The chaetotaxy and structures of the head, thorax and abdominal segments VIII and X of the first 3 instars of A&U aegqpti (Linnaeus) and An hUthi Huang, are tabulated and illustrated. Characters are tabulated that will permit identification of the 4 larval stages within each species and differentiate the first 3 larval instars of aegqp;ti and beti& A serial acquisition of certain thoracic setae...
Aquatic snails, Pila ampullacea and Pomacea canaliculata were experimentally found to be suitable paratenic hosts for advanced third-stage larvae (L3) of the nematode Gnathostoma spinigerum, the causative parasite of gnathostomiasis in humans. G. spinigerum (L3) were found to be encapsulated in the tissue of the snail's foot and its internal organs. The infection, intensity and survival of thir...
