Low stacking fault energy face centered cubic (FCC) materials contain characteristic defect structures. Stacking fault tetrahedral are one of those rare structures that occur under special experimental conditions. For the first time, stacking fault tetrahedral were observed in Fe-30Mn-3Al-3Si twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steel. Their presence resulted from a quenching heat treatment.

G-rich oligonucleotides T30695 (or T30923), with the sequence of (GGGT)(4), and T40214, with the sequence of (GGGC)(4), have been reported to exhibit anti-HIV and anticancer activity. Here we report on the structure of a dimeric G-quadruplex adopted by a derivative of these sequences in K(+) solution. It comprises two identical propeller-type parallel-stranded G-quadruplex subunits each contain...

Trilayer graphene in both ABA (Bernal) and ABC (rhombohedral) stacking sequences is shown to exhibit intense infrared absorption from in-plane optical phonons. The phonon feature, lying at ~1580 cm(-1), changes strongly with electrostatic gating. For ABC-stacked graphene trilayers, we observed a large enhancement in phonon absorption amplitude, as well as softening of the phonon mode, as the Fe...

The structural significance of introns in alpha and beta globin genes were evaluated in terms of the folding (or stacking) free energy of the nascent RNA sequences as obtained from secondary structure calculations. From calculations of the folding free energy of exons and introns, it was found that introns tend to have a more folded (globular) structure compared to the exon counterparts segment...

imperialist competitive algorithm (ica) is a new socio-politically motivated global search strategy. the ica is applied to hybrid composite laminates to obtain minimum weight and cost. the approach which is chosen for conducting the multi-objective optimization was the weighted sum method (wsm). the hybrid composite laminates are made of glass/epoxy and carbon/epoxy to combine the lightness and...

This work presents a multi-scale design methodology for the deterministic optimisation of thin-walled composite structures integrating global–local approach assessment buckling strength and dedicated strategy to recover blended stacking sequences. The is based on two-level anisotropic materials structures. In first step, focused macroscopic scale, several requirements are included in problem fo...

We introduce a sequence-dependent parametrization for a coarse-grained DNA model [T. E. Ouldridge, A. A. Louis, and J. P. K. Doye, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 085101 (2011)] originally designed to reproduce the properties of DNA molecules with average sequences. The new parametrization introduces sequence-dependent stacking and base-pairing interaction strengths chosen to reproduce the melting temperat...

Different numerical mappings of the DNA sequences have been studied using a new cluster-scaling method and the well known spectral methods. It is shown, in particular, that the nucleotide sequences in DNA molecules have robust cluster-scaling properties. These properties are relevant to both types of nucleotide pair-bases interactions: hydrogen bonds and stacking interactions. It is shown that ...
