Staphylococcal bacteria are a prevalent cause of infections associated with foreign bodies and indwelling medical devices. Bacteria are capable of escaping antibiotic treatment through encapsulation into biofilms. RNA III-inhibiting peptide (RIP) is a heptapeptide that inhibits staphylococcal biofilm formation by obstructing quorum-sensing mechanisms. K(4)-S4(1-13)(a) is a 13-residue dermasepti...

Staphylococcus aureus carriers with S. aureus bacteremia may have a reduced mortality risk compared to non-carriers. A role for the immune system is suggested. Here, we study in mice the effect of mild S. aureus skin infection prior to endogenous or exogenous S. aureus bacteremia, and evaluate protection in relation to anti-staphylococcal antibody levels. Skin infections once or twice by a clin...

The need for a reliable serological test for occult staphylococcal infection has long been evident, especially for the diagnosis of lesions of the spine and hip. Earlier reports on the use of the anti-a-haemolysin (Lack and Shelswell, 1955; Lack, 1957), and anti-leucocidin tests (Towers and Gladstone, 1958; Towers, 1961) have placed us in a position to compare the value of these two tests; anti...

Sera from individuals with Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis and osteomyelitis and from some individuals with other forms of gram-positive endocarditis yielded higher readings in a microenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay against lipoteichoic acid from S. aureus than did sera from individuals with other types of serious staphylococcal infection or non-staphylococcal osteomyelitis, or from unsele...

This controlled double-blind study examined the efficacy of a single large inoculum of Staphylococcus aureus 502A in interrupting intrafamilial spread of recurrent staphylococcal abscesses. Forty families were enrolled in the study and 32 completed six months of follow-up care. All participants were first treated with oral oxacillin sodium or dicloxacillin sodium, twice daily hexachlorophene sh...

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is characterized by widespread epithelial necrosis and/or superficial blistering of the following infection some toxigenic strains Staphylococcus aureus. The disease primarily affects children under age 5 years, but it can also occur in adults. Due to recent increase reported cases SSSS, we have reviewed epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, ...

Acute renal failure developed in a diabetic with staphylococcal arthritis and septicaemia in the absence of endocarditis. Renal biopsy showed proliferative glomerulonephritis and there was evidence of alternative pathway of complement activation. Renal function recovered following haemodialysis for 2 months. The association of glomerulonephritis with staphylococcal infection is reviewed.

BACKGROUND Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and ficolin-2 (FCN) are activators of the lectin pathway of complement and act as primary defences against infection. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the MBL2 and FCN2 genes influence the functionality of the proteins. Both proteins are capable of binding staphylococci, which are pathogens that frequently cause peritonitis in patients on continu...

The main bacterium associated with skin infection is Staphylococcus aureus, occurring especially in infections acquired via surgical wounds, commonly leading to lethal hospital-acquired infections, emphasizing the importance of identifying new antimicrobial compounds. Among them, cyclotides have gained interest due to their high stability and multifunctional properties. Here, cycloviolacin 2 (C...
