Potential hosts for infective juveniles of entomopathogenic nematodes can vary considerably in quality based on the characteristics of the host species/stage, physiological status (e.g. stress, feeding on toxins), and infection status (heterospecific or conspecific infection). In this study, we investigated responses of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema riobrave to hosts (Galleria mello...

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) are soil-transmitted parasites and their foraging strategies are believed to range from 'ambush' to 'cruise' foragers. However, research on their behaviour has not considered the natural habitat of these nematodes. We hypothesized that EPN behaviour would be influenced by soil habitat quality and tested this hypothesis using 2 EPN species Steinernema carpocapsae...

Selected morphometrics of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and seven species of Steinernema from in vivo culture were compared in relation to time of harvest. In addition, five Steinernema species were reared in vitro and their morphometrics were compared with those from in vivo culture. With in vivo culture, there was generally a negative linear relationship between body length of infective juven...

A survey of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) belonging to the families Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae was conducted in three municipalities on the Pacific coast of the State of Colima, México, to determine their occurrence and recovery frequency and predominant plant species in cultivated and non-cultivated habitats. Nineteen soil samples were collected: seven from non-cultivated habit...

We report here the draft genome sequence of Xenorhabdus khoisanae strain MCB, a Gram-negative bacterium and symbiont of a Steinernema entomopathogenic nematode. The genome assembly consists of 266 contigs covering 4.68 Mb. Genome annotation revealed 3,869 protein-coding sequences, with a G+C content of 43.5%.

Xenorhabdus griffiniae strain BMMCB (LDNM00000000) belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae and was isolated from the South African entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema khoisanae strain BMMCB (GenBank accession no. KT027382). Here, we report the draft whole-genome sequence of X. griffinae strain BMMCB with a genome size of 4,183,779 bp and 44.7% G+C content. The NCBI Prokaryotic Automatic Anno...

Species of Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus bacteria form mutualistic associations with Steinernema and Heterorhabditis nematodes, respectively and serve as model systems for studying microbe-animal symbioses. Here, we profiled gene expression of Xenorhabdus koppenhoeferi during their symbiotic persistence in the newly formed infective juveniles of the host nematode Steinernema scarabaei through th...
