We have carried out detailed magnetic and transport studies of the new Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) superconductors derived by doping Se in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2. Se-doping produces several effects: it suppresses semiconducting-like behavior observed in the undoped Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature, TFM, decreases considerably from 7.5 K (in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2) to 3.5 K and...

We will extend the concept of electron band Berry curvatures to superconducting materials. We show that this can be defined for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation describing the superconducting state in a periodic crystal. In addition, the concept is exploited to understand the driving mechanism for the optical Kerr effect in time reversal symmetry breaking superconductors. Finally, we establish...

The search for new superconducting materials has been spurred on by the discovery of iron-based superconductors whose structure and composition is qualitatively different from the cuprates. The study of one such material, KxFe2-ySe2 with a critical temperature of 32 K, is made more difficult by the fact that it separates into two phases-a dominant antiferromagnetic insulating phase K2Fe4Se5, an...

The characterization of materials supports their development and in particular of superconductors, for their technological applications. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is one of these characterization techniques, whose data is used to estimate the properties, determine the shortcomings and hence improve the material. The phenomenon of superconductivity initially develops within the grain an...

Two pairs of superconducting magnets will be inserted into CLEO as part of the CESR/CLEO phase III upgrade. Stray elds from the superconducting magnets will a ect the eld quality of the solenoid in the sensitive region of the CLEO detector. This problem was analyzed in [1]. In addition, the superconducting magnets will be supported by an active, high precision positioning system. Parts of the p...

We probe the presence of long-range correlations in phase fluctuations by analyzing the higher-order spectrum of resistance fluctuations in ultrathin NbN superconducting films. The non-Gaussian component of resistance fluctuations is found to be sensitive to film thickness close to the transition, which allows us to distinguish between mean field and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type s...

We report on a scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscope operating at temperatures down to 20 mK in a dilution refrigerator. The instrument is designed for studying quantum mechanical coherence effects in mesoscopic systems and investigating magnetic effects on a mesoscopic length scale in novel materials. We have demonstrated the low-temperature operating capabilities of ...

We have performed angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on the electron doped cuprate superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. A comparison of the leading edge midpoints between the superconducting and normal states reveals a small, but finite shift of 1.5-2 meV near the ( pi,0) position, but no observable shift along the zone diagonal near ( pi/2, pi/2). This is interpreted as evidence for an anis...
