Although some patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are successfully treated by nonsurgical means or by arthrocentesis or arthroscopic surgery, there is still a group of patients who do not respond to these procedures and for whom an arthrotomy and disc surgery (discoplasty) are necessary. Arthroscopy is an important diagnostic and therapeutic modality in the treatment of TMJ di...
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation is not a common presentation to the emergency department (ED) but one that requires prompt diagnosis and reduction. This is the first reported case of spontaneous bilateral TMJ dislocation after routine pulmonary function testing. The management of the case is discussed and a review of closed reduction techniques commonly used in the ED is presented.
We describe a case of a 17-year-old male who remained drowsy following left temporomandibular joint (TMJ) interposition arthroplasty for TMJ ankylosis. Computed tomography of the head demonstrated an extradural hematoma. The possible cause of this unusual occurrence is discussed.
This review summarizes knowledge on the accuracy and clinical usefulness of ultrasonography (US) for the diagnosis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. A systematic search in the National Library of Medicine's Database was performed to identify all peer-reviewed papers in the English literature that assessed the accuracy of US with respect to magnetic resonance (MR), computerized tomogra...
OBJECTIVES To assess the association of several dental malocclusion features with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) click sounds in a population of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four hundred forty-two TMD patients (72% female; 32.2 ± 5.7 years, range 25-44 years) were divided into a TMJ clicking and a no-TMJ clicking group, based on the Research Diagnostic Crite...
Background Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis in juvenile patients may lead to craniofacial growth deviations as well as interfere with optimal joint function and mouth opening pattern. Clinical assessment of maximal mouth opening capacity, laterotrusion and protrusion is widely used in the diagnosis of TMJ arthritis as well as in the evaluation of a therapeutic intervention in spite of mi...
Introduction The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a possible localization of arthritis in patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), with an estimated prevalence around 50%. Despite the decreasing involvement in the last years, maybe due to the current treatment strategies, TMJ remains one of the most clinically under recognized affected joints in JIA patients. The clinical examination ...
Successful management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis depends on adequate gap arthroplasty and interpositional graft; the objective is to produce a functioning pseudoarthrosis that prevents reankylosis and provides adequate mobility. Several interpositional grafts have been used for the treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis such as indigenous pterygomasseteric sling, tempora...
Introduction Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement is seen very often (17-87%) in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis that can lead to compromised craniomandibular function, dentofacial aestethics and morphology. Contrast enhanced MRI is the golden standart for diagnosis of TMJ arthritis (Argyropoulou, 2009). Previous studies show that HLA II class alleles may have protective or ris...
Dislocation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) secondary to a seizure is rare. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman, who presented with a left TMJ dislocation during a status epilepticus. The airway was protected until reduction. A bimanual relocation by Nelaton's manoeuvre was attempted successfully.
