This paper gives a contrastive analysis of function verbs in English and Japanese, cut and kiru in the framework of the Generative Lexicon (Pustejovsky 1995). Despite their division sense, these two express performance of an event when they take constituents which denote eventuality. They differ, however, in the resulting event structures. On the one hand, ‘cut+an event nominal’ can be dealt wi...

In a recent paper Asher and Pustejovsky propose a type theoretical approach to account for cases of copredication which had motivated Pustejovsky to introduce dot types in the Generative Lexicon. In this paper I will propose an alternative treatment to that given by Asher and Pustejovsky using type theory with records. I will suggest that using record types not only gives us a simple and intuit...

In this paper, we argue that contemporary approaches of constructionalist syntax in which there is no generative lexicon provide an interface between formal and conceptual semantics with which the gap between formal and conceptual semantics can be bridged. We introduce the framework with the discussion of formal and conceptual aspects of meaning in German spatial denominal prefixand particle ve...

Meaning shifting phenomena such as metonymy have recently attracted increasing interest of researchers. Though these phenomena have been addressed by plenty of computational methods, the impacts of cardinalities of metonymically related items have been widely ignored in all of them. Motivated by this lack of analysis, we have developed a method for representing expectations and knowledge about ...

In the recent years, different but similar approaches integrated lexical semantics within compositional semantics. These approaches all make use of type theory at least to compose the meanings. We present here with some details one of these approaches, ours, which makes use of second order lambda calculus as a type theory for meaning assembly and of multi sorted higher order predicate logic for...

This paper proposes an automatic acquisition method for preparation roles (PRs) and utilization roles (URs), which are analogues of agentive and telic roles in Generative Lexicon Theory. URs roughly express the purpose and function of a given object, and are defined as paraphrases of expressions such as “using an object” or “enjoying an object.” A PR of an object is defined as an expression ref...

In analyzing the formation of a given compound, both its internal syntactic structure and semantic relations need to be considered. The Generative Lexicon Theory (GL Theory) provides us with an explanatory model of compounds that captures the qualia modification relations in the semantic composition within a compound, which can be applied to natural language processing tasks. In this paper, we ...

In this paper we describe the conception of a software toolkit designed for the construction, maintenance and collaborative use of a Generative Lexicon. In order to ease its portability and spreading use, this tool was built with free and open source products. We eventually tested the toolkit and showed it filters the adequate form of anaphoric reference to the modifier in endocentric compounds.

Given a controversial issue, argument mining from texts in natural language is extremely challenging: besides linguistic aspects, domain knowledge is often required together with appropriate forms of inferences to identify arguments. Via the analysis of various corpora, this contribution explores the types of knowledge that are required to develop an efficient argument mining system. We show th...

In this introductory text, we present some of the main lexical semantics paradigms frequently used in Computational Linguistics circles. Most of the elements presented here come from different linguistic traditions. To make the text homogeneous, we have somewhat reformulated or simplified some of them. We successively present the notions of argument structure and thematic roles, the notion of a...
