In a preliminary communication (Trudinger, 1958) the separation of some soluble cytochromes of the autotrophic sulphur bacterium Thiobacillue X was briefly reported. Addition of thiosulphate to intact cells results in the rapid reduction of the cytochromes and the present work was undertaken to attempt to characterize the cytochromes and to obtain some information on the electron-transport chai...

This paper reports results of studies on the influence of the crystallographic mineral structure on the process of pyrite and marcasite leaching. Kinetic studies show that the crystallographic structure of minerals like FeS2 type does not influence the efficiency of the process.

Under anaerobic conditions and at circumneutral pH, cells of the widely distributed, obligate chemolithoautotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus denitrificans oxidatively dissolved synthetic and biogenic U(IV) oxides (uraninite) in nitrate-dependent fashion: U(IV) oxidation required the presence of nitrate and was strongly correlated with nitrate consumption. This is the first report of anaerobic U(I...

The present study aims to assess the effect of Thiobacillus and sulfur on morphological and biochemical properties of medicinal pumpkinproperties under deficit irrigation based on a split-plot design. For this purpose, water stress was applied as a main factor in three levels (control, no irrigation in flowering stage, no irrigation in fruiting), and Thiobacillus and sulfur fertilizers as sub-p...

This study demonstrates the efficacy of a direct 5S rRNA assay for the characterization of mixed microbial populations by using as an example the bacteria associated with acidic mining environments. The direct 5S rRNA assay described herein represents a nonselective, direct molecular method for monitoring and characterizing the predominant, metabolically active members of a microbial population...

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotype Flamingo was inoculated with Rhizobium tropici CIAT899 and Glomus intraradices by mycorrhizal inoculant or by contact with mycorrhized Stylosanthes guianensis and grown under sufficient versus deficient phosphorus supply after transfer from initial sand culture, for comparing the effects of double inoculation (by contact or by inoculant) on growth, n...

"Thiobacillus prosperus" is a halotolerant mesophilic acidophile that gains energy through iron and sulfur oxidation. Its physiology is poorly understood. Here, we describe the principal genomic features of the type strain of T. prosperus, DSM 5130. This is the first public genome sequence of an acidophilic halotolerant bacterium.

Oxidation of ferrous iron by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans SM-4 was inhibited competitively by increasing concentrations of ferric iron or cells. A kinetic analysis showed that binding of one inhibitor did not exclude binding of the other and led to synergistic inhibition by the two inhibitors. Binding of one inhibitor, however, was affected by the other inhibitor, and the apparent inhibition const...

Sulfur isotope effects during the oxidation of thiosulfate by Thiobacillus versutus were found to be negligible. This result is considered in relation to other oxidative and reductive processes to assess which reactions are most likely to control the isotopic compositions of sulfur compounds in microbial sulfureta.

Bioaugmentation is commonly employed as a remediation technology. However, numerous studies indicate that introduced microorganisms often do not survive in the environment and thus do not increase contaminant remediation. This review details several new approaches that may increase the persistence and activity of exogenous microorganisms and/or genes following introduction into the environment....
