BACKGROUND Recent studies suggest that the use of octyl cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive for closure of both traumatic lacerations and incisional surgical wounds results in a cosmetic outcome comparable to that achieved with conventional sutures. To date, no studies have looked at the use of tissue adhesive for higher-tension wounds, such as those created during cutaneous excisional procedures. ...

There are several studies about the cytotoxic effects of dental materials in contact with the pulp tissue, such as calcium hydroxide (CH), adhesive systems, resin composite and glass ionomer cements. The aim of this review article was to summarize and discuss the cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of materials used for protection of the dentin-pulp complex, some components of resin composites an...

Bioadhesives have drawn increasing interest in recent years, owing to their eco-friendly, biocompatible and biodegradable nature. As a typical bioadhesive, sticky exudate observed on the stalked glands of sundew plants aids in the capture of insects and this viscoelastic adhesive has triggered extensive interests in revealing the implied adhesion mechanisms. Despite the significant progress tha...

Objective. To compare the quality of resulting scar at 6 weeks after total thyroidectomy with the use of the tissue adhesive octyl-cyanoacrylate or subcuticular absorbable suture for the closure of cervicotomy. Material and Methods. There are 50 patients undergoing a cervicotomy for total thyroidectomy. Twenty-five patients were randomly assigned to closure with tissue adhesive and 25 with subc...

PURPOSE To determine whether a simple method for applying fibrin tissue adhesive to a clear corneal cataract incision can create a watertight seal. SETTING Laboratory investigation. METHODS Clear corneal cataract incisions were simulated in 8 eye-bank eyes. In 4 eyes, fibrin adhesive was applied to the incision in a simple manner; the other 4 eyes were controls with no adhesive. Each eye wa...

plants available. For this reason we have found that Teflon provides the most effective decompression because of its pliability. If compression by the implant is the proposed cause of recurrence, why is the recurrence rate so low? Drs. Ryu and Yamamoto propose an interesting alternative technique for performing microvascular decompression by coapting the vascular loop to the dura with the use o...

There is a significant medical need for tough biodegradable polymer adhesives that can adapt to or recover from various mechanical deformations while remaining strongly attached to the underlying tissue. We approached this problem by using a polymer poly(glycerol-co-sebacate acrylate) and modifying the surface to mimic the nanotopography of gecko feet, which allows attachment to vertical surfac...

Radiochemically sterilized Tissumend II Sterile was evaluated as an absorbable tissue adhesive/sealant for: 1) repairing corneal defects in rabbit models; 2) augmenting kidney incisional wounds in rabbits; and 3) sealing lacerated lung tissue in cats and dogs. Immediate post-surgical evaluation of treated sites indicated timely curing of tissue adhesives. Retrieved tissues from application site...

A prospective evaluation of Histoacryl tissue adhesive for the repair of simple scalp wounds is described. Fifty wounds were repaired using the adhesive and, on examination 5 days later, 49 wounds were fully healed, the remaining wound having only a small area of dehiscence. The advantage of this method of wound repair is discussed.
