Gregory Bateson was one of the last and most distinguished products of the school of anthropology that Haddon and Rivers created in Cambridge after the Torres Strait Expedition. Beginning his career shortly after Rivers' death, Bateson used the interwar years to create a theoretical approach that continued and deflected that of Haddon and Rivers. His major ethnography from this period, Naven, e...
a general gradient of 1 in 30. The west coast is covered to a depth of some miles with mangrove swamps, with a few stretches of sandy beach. The force of the north-east monsoon of the China Sea has for the most part kept the east coast free from mangrove. Islands are numerous on both coasts. The peninsula has been described as one huge forest intersected by numberless streams and rivers which f...
1. Comparative research and generalisations in lotic ecology are challenged by the dynamic hydrology of fluvial systems. The aim of this study was to understand more fully how factors such as light, nutrients and flow can predict variation in autochthonous production and algal biomass. 2. We measured seasonal changes in percent bankfull discharge, inorganic nutrient concentrations, turbidity, i...
SO(p, q) = {g ∈ SLp+q(R) : g>Qg = Q} (where Q = ( 1p 0 0 −1q ) ) SU(2) −→ SO(3) SL2(R) −→ SO(2, 1) SU(2)× SU(2) −→ SO(4) SL2(C) −→ SO(3, 1) SL2(R)× SL2(R) −→ SO(2, 2) Sp∗(2, 0) −→ SO(5) Sp∗(1, 1) −→ SO(4, 1) Sp2(R) −→ SO(3, 2) SU(4) −→ SO(6) SL2(H) −→ SO(5, 1) SU(2, 2) −→ SO(4, 2) SL4(R) −→ SO(3, 3) Thus, these are small examples...
Historically, rivers have served as sources of drinking water, fisheries resources, transportation routes, irrigation supplies, and waste removal systems. Human civilization has had many major effects on rivers, dating back more than 5000 years when Egyptians built dams on the Nile to supply water for crops and human consumption. Today, management of large rivers requires a balance between huma...
We develop uniform approximations for the trace formula for non-integrable systems in which SU(2) symmetry is broken by a non-linear term of the Hamiltonian. As specific examples, we investigate Hénon-Heiles type potentials. Our formalism can also be applied to the breaking of SO(3) symmetry in a three-dimensional cavity with axially-symmetric quadrupole deformation. PACS number: 03.65.Sq
The problem of generating uniform deterministic samples over the rotation group, SO(3), is fundamental to computational biology, chemistry, physics, and numerous branches of computer science. We present the best-known method to date for constructing incremental, deterministic grids on SO(3); it provides: 1) the lowest metric distortion for grid neighbor edges, 2) optimal dispersion-reduction wi...
The rivers sediment load is determined using hydrologic methods. In the statistical methods, by measuring the rivers discharge and suspended sediment load in a long-term period, the relationships between the suspended sediment load and discharge is obtained. The aim of this study is to compare different estimation methods of suspended load and select the most appropriate relationship for the pr...
1. We used field surveys to compare the density and mesohabitat-scale distribution of the native coastrange sculpin (Cottus aleuticus) and the prickly sculpin (C. asper) in coastal rivers in north-western California, U.S.A., with and without an introduced piscivorous fish, the Sacramento pikeminnow, Ptychocheilus grandis. We also measured mortality of tethered prickly sculpin in a field experim...
A $Gamma$-so-ring is a structure possessing a natural partial ordering, an infinitary partial addition and a ternary multiplication, subject to a set of axioms. The partial functions under disjoint-domain sums and functional composition is a $Gamma$-so-ring. In this paper we introduce the notions of subdirect product and $(phi,rho)$-product of $Gamma$-so-rings and study $(phi,rho)$-represen...
