Faba bean have been grown in Portugal for a long time and locally adapted populations are still maintained on farm. The genetic diversity of four Portuguese faba bean populations that are still cultivated in some regions of the country was evaluated using the Inter Retrotransposons Amplified Polymorphism (IRAP) technique. It was shown that molecular markers based on retrotransposons previously ...

Treatments with tritiated thymidine (TdR-(3)H) have revealed the existence of two populations of mitotically active cells in meristems of lateral roots of Vicia faba. A rapidly dividing population, with a cycle time of 14 hr, constitutes about half the cells in the meristem. A second population of cells, with a cycle time in excess of 30 hr, is also present. Estimates of the relative size of th...

Isolated epidermal strips of Vicia faba and Commelina communis release malate into their bathing medium when stomata close. This release was largest (about 0.6 of the initial malate content) when epidermal strips of C. communis were floated on 10(-5) M (+/-)-abscisic acid.

Figure 1. Stomatal network. The image (taken with a confocal microscope) shows stomata (the bean-shaped structures) separated by epidermal cells on the surface of a Vicia faba leaf. In this figure, the stomatal pore apertures are about 2 µm wide.

Stomata are microscopic pores in leaf epidermis that regulate gas exchange between plants and the environment. Being natural openings on the leaf surface, stomata also serve as ports for the invasion of foliar pathogenic bacteria. Each stomatal pore is enclosed by a pair of guard cells that are able to sense a wide spectrum of biotic and abiotic stresses and respond by precisely adjusting the p...

Grain legumes, such as soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), pea (Pisum sativum L.), faba bean (Vicia faba L.), lupins (Lupinus spp.), common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) and grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.), represent one of the most quality and least expensive solutions for a long-term demand for plant protein in animal husbandry. One of the limitations to an increased use of grain legumes as feed is t...

Abstract From harvesting to consumption of the faba bean ( Vicia ), different plant residues such as stems, leaves, pods, and seed husks remain by-products. The harvest constitute about 50% (w/w) whole aboveground biomass, while empty pods account for 11% 6% on average, respectively. Due environmental dietary benefits, global production beans is most likely increase in future. Concomitantly, am...

in order to study the effect of planting date, row spacing and seed rate on grain yield and protein yield of faba bean (vicia faba l.), a split factorial experiment based on the complete randomized block design with three replications was conducted at research station of rice research institute of iran (rasht) during 2008-2010 for two years. experimental treatments were planting date in three l...
