We deal with initial-boundary value problems describing vertical vibrations of viscoelastic von Kármán-Donnell shells with a rigid inner obstacle. The short memory (Kelvin-Voigt) material is considered. A weak formulation of the problem is in the form of the hyperbolic variational inequality. We solve the problem using the penalization method.
We present methods for detecting phase synchronization of two unidirectionally coupled, self-sustained noisy oscillators from a signal of the driven oscillator alone. One method detects soft phase locking; another hard phase locking. Both are applied to the problem of detecting phase synchronization in von Kármán vortex flow meters.
A novel approximation technique using Lagrange finite elements is proposed to solve magneto-dynamics problems involving discontinuous magnetic permeability and non-smooth interfaces. We show that a model, recently used to describe all the dynamical regimes of the magnetic field generated by the dynamo effect in the von Kármán sodium experiment, also provides a simple explanation of the reversals of Earth's magnetic field, despite strong differences between both systems. The validity of the model relies on the smallness of the magnetic Prandtl number.
