We study the imaginary part of the effective ac conductivity as well as its distribution probability for vanishing losses in 2D composites. This investigation showed that the effective medium theory provides only informations about the average conductivity, while its fluctuations which correspond to the field energy in this limit are neglected by this theory.

Frequency difference limens were determined as a function of stimulus duration in five normal-hearing and seven hearing-impaired subjects. The frequency DL duration functions obtained from normal-hearing subjects were similar to those reported by Liang and Chistovich [Sov. Phys. Acoust. 6, 75-80 (1961)]. As duration increased, the DL's improved rapidly over a range of short durations, improved ...

Frequency modulation (FM) detection was investigated in acoustic and electric hearing to characterize cochlear-implant subjects' ability to detect dynamic frequency changes and to assess the relative contributions of temporal and spectral cues to frequency processing. Difference limens were measured for frequency upward sweeps, downward sweeps, and sinusoidal FM as a function of standard freque...

Background: Among patients who have sensorineural hearing loss of unknown etiology, diabetes is one of the diseases to be routinely investigated. The relationship between diabetes mellitus and hearing loss is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) compared to contr...

A series of experiments investigated the influence of harmonic resolvability on the pitch of, and the discriminability of differences in fundamental frequency (F0) between, frequency-modulated (FM) harmonic complexes. Both F0 (62.5 to 250 Hz) and spectral region (LOW: 125-625 Hz, MID: 1375-1875 Hz, and HIGH: 3900-5400 Hz) were varied orthogonally. The harmonics that comprised each complex could...

This study examined both the identification and discrimination of vowels by three listener groups: elderly hearing-impaired, elderly normal-hearing, and young normal-hearing. Each hearing-impaired listener had a longstanding symmetrical, sloping, mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Two signal levels [70 and 95 dB sound-pressure level (SPL)] were selected to assess the effects of audibi...

Robust regression and classification are often thought to require non-convex lossfunctions that prevent scalable, global training. However, such a view neglectsthe possibility of reformulated training methods that can yield practically solvablealternatives. A natural way to make a loss function more robust to outliers isto truncate loss values that exceed a maximum threshold. We...

In this study, estimation of genetic parameters of Lameness and genetic and phenotypic correlations between Lameness and milk, fat and protein yield were performed. The data obtained from 63403 Holstein cows were collected from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran between 2001 to 2013 Estimation of genetic parameters for lameness was performed by univariate animal and Threshold models. Also, esti...

Recently disturbed and ‘control’ (i.e. less recently disturbed) soils in the Mojave Desert were compared for their vulnerability to wind erosion, using a wind tunnel, before and after being experimentally trampled. Before trampling, control sites had greater cyanobacterial biomass, soil surface stability, threshold friction velocities (TFV; i.e. the wind speed required to move soil particles), ...

background and objective : obstructive sleep apnea (osa) through hypoxia and reoxygenation periods leads to oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and activation of inflammatory cycles, which eventually may cause disorder in vasa nervorum, and peripheral neuropathy in hearing pathway. in this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of severe sleep apnea on hearing function. materials and met...
