Platelet adhesion to fibrin at high shear rates depends on both the glycoprotein (GP) IIb:IIIa complex and a secondary interaction between GPIb and von Willebrand factor (vWF). This alternative link between platelets and vWF in promoting platelet adhesion to fibrin has been examined in flowing whole blood with a rectangular perfusion chamber. Optimal adhesion required both platelets and vWF, as...

In this paper we show that controlling adhesion in highly flexible nanovectors can help in smartly delivering the drug. The high flexibility of the nanovector is used to smartly deliver the drug only at the target site by the new concept of "adhesion induced nanovector implosion"; a liquid drop analogy is developed for the calculations.

Focal contacts, focal complexes and related extracellular matrix adhesions are used by cells to explore their environment. These sites act as mechanosensory 'devices', where internal contractile forces or externally applied force can regulate the assembly of the adhesion site and trigger adhesion-dependent signaling involving Rho-family small G-proteins and other signaling pathways. The molecul...

Recent studies have shown that the targeting of substrate adhesions by microtubules promotes adhesion site disassembly (Kaverina, I., O. Krylyshkina, and J.V. Small. 1999. J. Cell Biol. 146:1033-1043). It was accordingly suggested that microtubules serve to convey a signal to adhesion sites to modulate their turnover. Because microtubule motors would be the most likely candidates for effecting ...

BACKGROUND Intra-articular adhesion is one of the common complications of post knee surgery and injury. The formation of joint adhesion can lead to serious dysfunction. Rosuvastatin (ROS) is a new 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor, with multiple biological effects. In our study, the object was to evaluate the effectiveness of ROS in the prevention of post-opera...

Whether induced by infection, inflammation, ischemia, and/or surgical injury, peritoneal adhesions are the leading cause of pelvic pain, bowel obstruction and infertility. It is clear that while postsurgical peritoneal wounds heal without adhesions in some patients, others develop severe scarring from seemingly equal procedures; in addition, in the same patient, adhesions can develop at one sur...

The motile behavior of endothelial cells is a crucial event for neoangiogenesis. We previously showed that noncytotoxic concentrations of vinflunine inhibit capillary-like tube formation on Matrigel and endothelial cell migration with a concomitant increase in interphase microtubule dynamic instability. In this article, we further investigated the effects of vinflunine on migration and cytoskel...

Integrin adhesion receptors contain an on/off switch that regulates ligand binding affinity and cell adhesion. The switch from "off" to "on" is commonly referred to as integrin activation. The objective of this study was to gain insight into the nature of the on/off switch in platelet integrin alpha(IIb)beta(3). Here, we show that a select group of the cysteines, located within the extracellula...

When a blood vessel ruptures or gets inflamed, the human body responds by rapidly forming a clot to restrict the loss of blood. Platelets aggregation at the injury site of the blood vessel occurring via platelet-platelet adhesion, tethering and rolling on the injured endothelium is a critical initial step in blood clot formation. A novel three-dimensional multi-scale model is introduced and use...

We have used an in vitro model system of glass-supported planar membranes to study the effects of lateral mobility of membrane-bound receptors on cell adhesion. Egg phosphatidylcholine (PC) bilayers were reconstituted with two anchorage isoforms of the adhesion molecule lymphocyte function-associated antigen 3 (LFA-3). The diffusion coefficient of glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored LF...
