Introduction: Intensive care unit is one of the most stressful wards for patients and it is estimated that 30 to70 percent of patients experience severe physiologic stress during admission. Some of the physiologic responses to stress include increase in metabolic rate with consequent increase in body temperature, increase in cardiac output and contraction power and subsequently increase in bloo...

conclusions intravenous acetaminophen administered before caesarean section reduced tachycardia after intubation, narcotic drugs administration during and after the operation and reduced pain in pacu. results patients in the saline group experienced more pain in the recovery room (vas 7.0 ± 1.24 vs. 6.15 ± 2.27; p value = 0.041) and required more fentanyl intraoperatively (150 µg vs. 87.7 ± 75;...

The role of arterial baroreceptors in controlling arterial pressure (AP) variability through changes in sympathetic nerve activity was examined in conscious rats. AP and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) were measured continuously during 1-h periods in freely behaving rats that had been subjected to sinoaortic baroreceptor denervation (SAD) or a sham operation 2 wk before study (n = 10 in...

We examined the effect of low-intensity single-leg exercise (20 or 30 watt, 5 min) on pulse wave velocity from the femoral to the ankle arteries in 18 young men. After the exercise, the velocity significantly decreased in the exercised leg, but not in the counterpart, suggesting that the decrease in arterial stiffness in the exercised leg was induced mainly by exercise-related regional factors.

This research was undertaken to develop a cardiovascular simulator for use in the study of pulse diagnosis. The physical (i.e., pulse wave transmission and reflection) and physiological (i.e., systolic and diastolic pressure, pulse pressure, and mean pressure) characteristics of the radial pulse wave were reproduced by our simulator. The simulator consisted of an arterial component and a pulse-...

OBJECTIVE To validate a new, small portable tonometer (PulsePen) that is able to assess carotid artery pressure and to measure pulse wave velocity (PWV) non-invasively. Its software provides absolute arterial pressure values, an assessment of arterial pulse wave contours, an estimation of reflection waves and measurements of PWV. DESIGN AND METHODS Two validation studies were carried out. The...

Treatment of acute pain and hemodynamic changes after surgery is extremely important. Various drugs for pain relief after surgery have been studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single dose of oral pregabalin on hemodynamic changes and duration of analgesia after spinal anesthesia in orthopedic surgeries of tibia fractures. This clinical trial was carried out on 120 pat...

Evidence of arterial pulse pressure variations caused by cardio-pulmonary interactions, and their connection to volume status via the Frank-Starling relationship, are well documented in the literature. Computation of pulse pressure variations from arterial pressure measurements is complicated by the fact that systolic and diastolic peaks are not evenly spaced in time. A robust, structurally unc...

With advancing age, arterial stiffness and wave reflections increase and elevate systolic and pulse pressures. An elevated central pulse pressure is generally ascribed to increased wave reflection and portends an unfavorable prognosis. Using arterial tonometry, we evaluated central (carotid-femoral) and peripheral (carotid-brachial) pulse wave velocity, amplitudes of forward and reflected press...
