Glycoinformatics is a small but growing branch of bioinformatics and chemoinformatics. Various resources are now available that can be of use to glycobiologists, but also to chemists who work on the synthesis or analysis of carbohydrates. This article gives an overview of existing glyco-specific databases and tools, with a focus on their application to glycochemistry: Databases can provide info...

Bioinformatics can be considered as a bridge between life science and computer science. Biology requires high and large computing power to performance biological applications and to access huge number of distributed and (often) heterogeneous databases. Computer scientists and database communities have expertises in high performance algorithms computation and in data management. Considering bioi...

In this review, we take a survey of bioinformatics databases and quantitative structure-activity relationship studies reported in published literature. Databases from the most general to special cancer-related ones have been included. Most commonly used methods of structure-based analysis of molecules have been reviewed, along with some case studies where they have been used in cancer research....

In this paper, an overview of the main topics presented in the special session of bioinformatics and biomedical engineering is presented. Bioinformatics consists of two subfields: the development of computational tools and databases, and the application of these tools and databases in generating biological knowledge to better understand living systems, being the main subject genomics and proteo...

Novelty detection techniques might be a promising way of dealing with high-dimensional classification problems in Bioinformatics. We present preliminary results of the use of a one-class support vector machine approach to detect novel classes in two Bioinformatics databases. The results are compatible with theory and inspire further investigation.

Biologists and biotechnologists need to draw information from numerous distributed and heterogeneous resources, such as online biomedical databases, nomenclatures and specialised bioinformatics tools. These tasks can benefit significantly from semantic data federation with SADI Semantic Web services where multiple resources exposed through SADI services are accessed as a single virtual SPARQL-q...

Novelty Detection techniques might be a promising way of dealing with high-dimensional classification problems in Bioinformatics. This paper presents the early results of the use of a One-Class SVM approach to detect novel classes in two Bioinformatics databases. The results are compatible with the theory and inspire further investigations.

In silico bioinformatics experiments involve integration of and access to computational tools and biological databases. The emerging grid computing technologies enable bioinformatics scientists to conduct their researches in a virtual laboratory, in which they share public databases, computational tools as well as their analysis workflows. However, the development of grid applications is still ...
