The transmission and fluorescence of the compound eye of living, intact blowflies Cuiliphoru erythrocephala, mutant chalky, were studied microspectrophotomettically. Transmission spectra were recorded under four conditions. The fly was either in the normal air environment or in a nitrogen atmosphere, and in both cases the investigated eye was adapted to red and blue light. respectively. The abs...

White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) have matched the emission efficiency of florescent lights and will rapidly spread as light source for homes and offices in the next 5 to 10 years. WLEDs provide a light element having a semiconductor light emitting layer (blue or near-ultraviolet (nUV) LEDs) and photoluminescence phosphors. These solidstate LED lamps, rather than organic light emitting diode ...

White hybrid inorganic/organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated by combining a novel organic colour converter with a blue inorganic LED. An organic small molecule was specifically synthesised to act as down-converter. The characteristics of the white colour were controlled by changing the concentration of the organic molecule based on the BODIPY unit, which was embedded in a transpa...

Monodisperse conjugated oligomers are potentially useful for organic electronics because of chemical purity and structural uniformity, facilitating the elucidation of structure-property relationships and the realization of superior device performance. Nematic liquid crystalline conjugated oligomers with above-ambient glass transition temperatures represent an attractive approach to prepare unia...

We have used the technique of spectro-astrometry to study the milli-arcsecond scale structure of the emission lines in the T Tauri star RU Lupi. The wings of the Hα emission are found to be displaced from the star towards the southwest (blue wing) and northeast (red wing) with angular scales of 20-30 milli-arcsecs. This structure is consistent with a bipolar outflow from the star. From a study ...

A weakly magnetized expanding hydrogen plasma, created by a cascaded arc, was investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. The emission of the expanding plasma is dominated by H{α} emission in the first part of the plasma expansion, after which a sharp transition to a blue afterglow is observed. The position of this sharp transition along the expansion axis depends on the magnetic field st...

Yellow fluorescent protein (YFP), which has a bound FMN, was isolated from the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri strain Y-1b. Its presence in a luciferase [alkanal monooxygenase (FMN-linked); alkanal, reduced-FMN:oxygen oxidoreductase (1-hydroxylating, luminescing), EC 1.14.14.3] reaction mixture causes a striking color change, and an increase in bioluminescence intensity, as well as a faster ra...

In this work we demonstrate by photoluminescence studies white light emission from a monolithic InGaN/GaN single quantum well structure grown by metal organic chemical vapour deposition. As-grown and thermally annealed samples at high temperature (1000 °C, 1100 °C and 1200 °C) and high pressure (1.1 GPa) were analysed by spectroscopic techniques, and the annealing effect on the photoluminescenc...

A novel BODIPY-containing organic small molecule is synthesized and employed as a down-converting layer on a commercial blue light-emitting diode (LED). The resulting hybrid device demonstrates white-light emission under low-current operation, with color coordinates of (0.34, 0.31) and an efficacy of 13.6 lm/W; four times greater than the parent blue LED.
