Calcium crystals are present in the synovial fluid of 65%-100% patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and 20%-39% patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study sought to investigate the role of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) in calcium mineral formation. We found that numerous genes classified in the biomineral formation process, including bone gamma-carboxyglutamate (gla) protein/osteoca...

Introduction: When it comes to pathological calcification one cannot avoid the fact that the extensive calcification in the plaque of the arteries is of special interest since it is considered to be one the most threatening diseases. Purose: The intention of the study is suggest through a review of the importance of denticles in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Materials and methods: The ...

Microcalcifications in the breast are highly suggestive of malignancy; they can occur in many pathological conditions. A 36-years-old nondiabetic woman came to the gynaecologist with a suspect palpable mass in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast. Histopathological examination confirmed a calcification of a small artery (diameter: 0.45 mm). Arterial calcifications can mimic a malignant ...

R etinoma is a benign, elevated, gray, translucent retinal mass with cottage cheese–like calcification and hyperpigmented retinal pigment epithelium. Histopathological features includeabundant fleurettes and nonproliferative cells. We report a case in which an underlying retinoma was revealed by collapse and massive vitreous dispersion of the overlying unilateral retinoblastoma after 1 cycle of...

This is the report of an 11-year-old boy with chronic renal disease and secondary hyperparathyroidism. The child had been on dialysis, calcitriol, calcium carbonate, and presented dyslipidemia and calcified thrombi in various vessels and organs in the course of his condition. Pathological examination showed ischemic cerebral necrosis, calcification in coronary arteries, and myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVE Vascular and valvular calcifications are pathological processes regulated by resident cells, and depending on a complex interplay between calcification promoters and inhibitors, resembling skeletal metabolism. Here, we study the role of the vitamin K-dependent Gla-rich protein (GRP) in vascular and valvular calcification processes. APPROACH AND RESULTS Immunohistochemistry and quant...

Bioprosthetic valves fail frequently because of pathological mineralization, a process that begins in cell remnants of the glutaraldehyde (GLUT) fixed tissue. Other pathological cardiovascular calcification and physiological mineralization in skeletal/dental tissues are both largely initiated in cell-derived membranous structures (often called "matrix vesicles"), and the enzyme alkaline phospha...

Vascular calcification is present in many pathological conditions and is recognized as a strong predictor of future cardiovascular events. Current evidence suggests that it is a regulated process involving inducing and inhibitory molecules. Glucocorticoids have great clinical importance as antiinflammatory drugs and can act as potent inducers of osteogenic differentiation in vitro. The effect o...
