The interaction of a tetracationic calixarene (TAC4) with dianionic guest (BS) in water was studied with NMR, nano-ITC and ESI-MS experiments; the convergent evidence provided by these different techniques shows that the addition of a suitable guest molecule triggers the formation of a homodimeric capsule in aqueous neutral solution.

A direct mercuration reaction combined with a subsequent Pd-catalyzed arylation was used to introduce the aryl moiety into the meta position of the calix[4]arene skeleton. The application of organomercurial intermediates thus allows the straightforward formation of meta-aryl-substituted derivatives representing a unique substitution pattern in calixarene chemistry.

This review aims to provide an overview of recent examples of lanthanoid-calixarene complexes incorporated into light-emitting materials. Background information on the antenna effect and early work on lanthanoid complexes on calixarenes is provided to set the context. Classes of materials discussed include polymers, nanoparticles, and metal clusters.
