We have fabricated ordered arrays of nanoscale torsional actuators consisting of metal mirrors bonded to precisely oriented multiwall carbon nanotubes. The fabrication is facilitated by a new nanotube positioning method which employs localized electron beam activation of polymer residue on a silicon oxide surface.

Intermolecular carbon nanotube junctions were formed through amide linkage of amino functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes and [Ru (dcbpy)(bpy)2](PF6)2, an inorganic metal complex. Nanotube interconnects were visualized using atomic force microscopy. Absorption and emission spectroscopy showed significant changes between starting products and the resulting ruthenium nanotube complex, indicat...

To achieve an efficient electron transfer communication between bacteria and electrodes, several strategies including enzyme surface display, bacteria elongation as well as layer-by-layer assembly techniques were used to assemble bacteria, methylene blue, multiwall carbon nanotubes, and carbon papers into hierarchical micro/nano artificial biofilm based bioanodes.

A bstract. Detailed growth mechanism of single-wall nanotube bundles and of multiwall nanotubes of carbon is investigated using ab initio and parametrized calculations. Our results show that single-wall tubes grow only in presence of a catalyst, whereas multi-wall tubes, stabilized at the growing edge by a covalent "lip-lip" interaction, may form in a pure carbon atmosphere. The individual tube...

Using atomically-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we probe the nature of interwall interactions within multiwall carbon nanotubes at room temperature. We find that, at low bias voltages, the tunnel current depends strongly on the atomic position, introducing visibility differences between adjacent lattice sites. Since all atoms are equally visible in analogous measuremen...

Molecular dynamics modeling shows that multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with sp;{3} interwall bonding have strengths exceeding those of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) containing the same size initial intrawall defect, and are far less sensitive to defect size. Thus, although processing methods used to increase interwall coupling also create intrawall defects, analyses here show that t...

We describe a two-step synthesis of pure multiwall MoS2 nanotubes with a high degree of homogeneity in size. The Mo6S4I6 nanowires grown directly from elements under temperature gradient conditions in hedgehog-like assemblies were used as precursor material. Transformation in argon-H2S/H2 mixture leads to the MoS2 nanotubes still grouped in hedgehog-like morphology. The described method enables...

We have successfully prepared mono- and bi-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) with thiophene, amine and thiophene-amine groups. The dispersion of nanotubes has been enhanced and stable optimized dispersions in organic solvents were obtained. These functionalized nanotubes have been successfully incorporated into bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells with a po...

Different types of crystalline carbon nanomaterials were used to reinforce polyaniline for use in electromechanical bilayer bending actuators. The objective is to analyze how the different graphitic structures of the nanocarbons affect and improve the in situ polymerized polyaniline composites and their subsequent actuator behavior. The nanocarbons investigated were multiwalled carbon nanotubes...

It is difficult to predict the measurement bias arising from the compliance of the atomic force microscope (AFM) probe. The issue becomes particularly important in this situation where nanometer uncertainties are sought for measurements with dimensional probes composed of flexible carbon nanotubes mounted on AFM cantilevers. We have developed a finite element model for simulating the mechanical...
