In this paper an attempt is made to offer insights into local slope failure mechanisms from the perspective of hydrogeology. The hypothesis examined envisages that the hydraulic conductivity distribution in a weathered profile includes a relatively high hydraulic conductivity zone associated with the jointed rock mass near rockhead. There is evidence locally for such a condition. The groundwate...
The reliability problem must be solved for achieving large-scale application about LEDs, and the temperature is a key factor to affect LED reliability. In order to find the temperature effects on the module of high-power light emitting diodes (LEDs), a finite element approach was used to study the reliability problems of LEDs under high temperature and low temperature. A thermal shock experimen...
Microstructural, mechanical, and thermal-shock behavior of hot-gas candle fiters obtained from different manufacturers have been evaluated. These filters include both monolithic ceramic and composite materials. Based on the results obtained so far, composite filters perform better than monolithic ceramic filters in a thermal-shock environment. During thermal-shock testing, the monolithic cerami...
In this study, the deformation and damage mechanisms on meso and macro scales in a particulate composite and a polyurethane material, Solithane 113, were investigated. The particulate composite contains 87% by weight of hard particles embedded in a rubbery matrix. Experimental data were analyzed and the effect of material’s microstructure on the deformation and failure mechanisms are discussed.
Recently the nonparametric predictive approach to inference for competing risks was introduced [1]. In this paper further results for such inferences are presented, with focus on four important and closely related aspects. First, the effect of defined failure modes which thus far have not yet caused failures is studied. Secondly, the effect of re-defining (groups of) failure modes is considered...
Hemodynamic shock is a final common pathway associated with regularly encountered emergencies including myocardial infarction, microbial sepsis, pulmonary embolism, significant trauma and anaphylaxis. Shock results in impaired tissue perfusion, cellular hypoxia, and metabolic derangements that cause cellular injury. Prompt recognition and intervention are the cornerstones of mitigating the dire...
The electrical substation components are often subject to degradation due to over-voltage or over-current, caused by a short circuit or a lightning. A particular interest is given to the circuit breaker, regarding the importance of its function and its dangerous failure. This component degrades gradually due to the use, and it is also subject to the shock process resulted from the stress of iso...
Sepsis is the leading cause of mortality and a major healthcare concern worldwide [1]. It is characterized as a life-threatening disease, enhanced by a dysregulated immune host response to a precipitating infection. It’s a multifaceted disease, encompassing various organs and may lead to endorgan failure, shock and death. In a healthy human being the pro-inflammatory response triggered by micro...
This paper proposes an alternative mechanism of pile failure in liquefiable deposits during earthquakes. This failure mechanism, based on pile buckling, is formulated by back-analysing 14 case histories of pile foundation performance during earthquakes and verified using dynamic centrifuge tests. A new parameter, the slenderness ratio of a pile, is introduced to classify pile performance in liq...
