Efficient synthesis of bis(indolyl)methanes by the reaction of indole with certain aldehydes and ketones in water afforded the corresponding bis(indolyl)methanes in excellent yields. This reaction has been carried out in the presence of 2 mol% of cerium(IV)triflate at room temperature.

Gold nanoparticles supported on cerium(IV) oxide powder showed strong absorption at around 550 nm due to localized surface plasmon resonance of Au and exhibited a higher level of activity than other Au-supporting samples in mineralization of organic acids in aqueous suspensions under irradiation of visible light (> ca. 520 nm).

We, for the first time, report that many Mn oxides (Mn3O4, α-Mn2O3, β-MnO2, CaMnO3, Ca2Mn3O8, CaMn3O6 and CaMn4O8) in the presence of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate, in the water oxidation, convert to layered Mn oxide. This layered Mn oxide is an efficient water oxidizing catalyst.
