Illnesses resulting from antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), are increasing. Recent evidence shows that pathogens once associated with clinical settings are now contaminating non-clinical environments, including public facilities. While methods of isolation and detection of MRSA in clinical settings are established, methods to detect MRSA...

The new VITEK 2 colorimetric card was compared to the previous fluorometric card for identification of yeast. API 20C was considered the "gold standard." The new card consistently performed better than the older card. Isolates from CHROMagar Candida plates were identified equally as well as those from Sabouraud dextrose agar.

BBL CHROMagar VanRE (CVRE) was compared with bile esculin azide agar plus vancomycin to screen for vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) colonization. CVRE distinguishes Enterococcus faecalis (green colonies) from Enterococcus faecium (mauve colonies) on the basis of chromogenic substrate use. CVRE sensitivity and specificity were 98.6% and 99.1%. Positive and negative predictive values were ...

We compared the recovery of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on a new selective chromogenic agar, BD BBL CHROMagar MRSA II (CMRSAII), to that on traditional culture media with 293 stool specimens. The recovery of MRSA was greater on the CMRSAII agar. Screening of stool samples can identify patients who were previously unknown carriers of MRSA.

A novel chromogenic medium CHROMagar mSuperCARBA was evaluated to detect carbapenem-resistant Gram-negatives. This medium is as sensitive and as specific as the SUPERCARBA medium for detecting KPC, MBL and OXA-48-type producers (100% and 100%, respectively) and is compatible with subsequent testing of carbapenemase activity using the RAPIDEC® CARBA NP.

The performance of BBL CHROMagar O157 (CHROM) versus that of sorbitol-MacConkey (SMAC) media for detection of Escherichia coli O157 was determined for a 3-month period. Results for 27/3,116 (0.9%) stool cultures were positive. CHROM had a higher sensitivity (96.30%) and negative predictive value (100%) and a better diagnostic efficiency than SMAC. Labor and material costs decreased when CHROM w...

Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPCs) have recently been described in Chicago, IL, especially among residents of long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs). These patients are frequently transferred to local Chicago hospitals for higher acuity of medical care, and rapid detection and isolation of KPC-colonized LTACH residents may interrupt the introduction of KPCs into acute care hospitals. ...
