In this paper we discuss the design and implementation of Fellowship, a 300+ CPU, general use computing cluster based on FreeBSD. We address the design features including configuration management, network booting of nodes, and scheduling which make this cluster unique and how FreeBSD helped (and hindered) our efforts to make this design a reality.
A cluster algorithm is presented for the Z 2 Kalb-Ramond plaquette model in four dimensions which dramatically reduces critical slowing. The critical exponent z is reduced from z > 2 (standard Metropolis algorithm) to z = 0.32 ± 0.06. The Cluster algorithm updates the monopole configuration known to be responsible for the second order phase transition.
We report here a benchmark study on the bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (S(N)2) reaction between hydride and methane, for which we have obtained reference energies at the coupled cluster toward full configuration-interaction limit (CC-cf/CBS). Several wavefunction (HF, MP2, coupled cluster) and density functional methods are compared for their reliability regarding these reference data.
