In most cognitive architectures, episodic memory is either not implemented, or plays a secondary role. In contrast, in the Xapagy architecture episodic memory is the primary means of acquiring and using knowledge. Shadowing, the main reasoning method of the system, relies on unprocessed historical recordings of concrete events to determine the agent’s behavior. This paper outlines the use of ep...

Introduction Organisms learn from experience in many ways. One component of learning from experience is recording what has happened in the world when actions are taken, a form of episodic memory, and distilling such experience over time to learn models of phenomena for generating expectations. As further actions are taken, the accuracy of such models can be monitored, to detect surprises and to...

Mathematical patterns are an important subclass of the class of patterns. The main task of this paper is examining a particular proposal concerning the nature of mathematical patterns and some elements of the cognitive structure an agent should have to recognize them.

Learning theory and programs to date are inductively bounded: they can be described as “wind-up toys” which can only learn the kinds of things that their designers envisioned. We conjecture [1] that general intelligence involves an unbounded learning ability. VARIAC is an experimental cognitive architecture designed to learn by modifying and extending itself, including its ability to learn, so ...

Kirschner, Sweller, and Clark (2006) suggest that unguided or minimally guided instructional approaches are less effective and efficient for novices than guided instructional approaches because they ignore the structures that constitute human cognitive architecture. While we concur with the authors on this point, we do not agree to their equation of problem-based learning with minimally guided ...

In an experiment in functional elegance, episodic memory and learning have been deconstructed in the Sigma cognitive architecture in terms of pre-existing memory and learning mechanisms plus a template-based structure generator. As a side effect, base-level activation also becomes deconstructed in terms of a learned temporal prior.
