– We study the effect of shear on the aging dynamics of a colloidal suspension of synthetic clay particles. We find that a shear of amplitude γ reduces the relaxation time measured just after the cessation of shear by a factor exp(−γ/γc), with γc ∼ 5%. From this rejuvenation effect, we extract a quantitative strain/temperature correspondence between colloidal systems and molecular or spin glass...

Biocompatible and robust gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared via a simple synthetic strategy employing dextran as a reducing agent and surface coating material. Cross-linking and amination of the surface-coated dextran significantly improved the colloidal stability of AuNPs and rendered the nanoparticles more amenable to bioconjugation.

The Cr-based tellurides are attractive material systems for fundamental studies and potential applications. Colloidal syntheses of ferromagnetic Cr(2)Te(3) and CuCr(2)Te(4) nanocrystals with uniform morphology and narrow size distribution are reported together with their detailed magnetic characterisation.

The latest advances in colloidal-quantum-dot material processing are combined with a double-sided junction architecture, which is done by efficiently incorporating indium ions in the ZnO eletrode. This platform allows the collection of all photogenerated carriers even at the maximum power point. The increased depletion width in the device facilitates full carrier collection, leading to a record...

Starting with metal dithiocarbamate complexes, we synthesize colloidal Cu(2)ZnSnS(4) (CZTS) nanocrystals with diameters ranging from 2 to 7 nm. Structural and Raman scattering data confirm that CZTS is obtained rather than other possible material phases. The optical absorption spectra of nanocrystals with diameters less than 3 nm show a shift to higher energy due to quantum confinement.

Abstract: Efforts have been carried out in order to use microsilica to develop a forsterite bond rather than other types of binders in the basic refractory castables. According to the higher drying rate and sinterability of colloidal silica, it has been proposed in the recent years. In the present work, effects of replacement of microsilica by colloidal silica evolution of forsterite bond have ...

In this chapter, postembedding immunoelectron microscopy methods for studies of cornified cell envelopes are provided. Human epidermal tissue samples are used as the material. The samples are cryo-fixed without chemical fixation, freeze-substituted at a low temperature, and embedded in Lowicryl K11M resin. For immunostaining, colloidal gold-conjugated secondary antibodies are used. Methods for ...

We present a robust and fast method to quantify the adhesion energy of surface anchored proteins on material surfaces using soft colloidal particles as sensors. The results obtained from studying the adhesion of fibronectin on surfaces with different hydrophobicity were in good agreement with theoretical considerations demonstrating the feasibility of the method.

Unique nanorods and nanobelts of Prussian blue (PB) analogue SmFe(CN)6.4H2O have been successfully synthesized by using reverse micelles as colloidal soft templates; magnetic studies show that the shape of the low-dimensional nanoscale material is a dominating factor for its coercivity due to the effect of shape anisotropy.
