The authors describe a case of nasal and macular retinoschisis in a patient with open angle glaucoma. A 75 year-old female with optic nerve head damage secondary to chronic open angle glaucoma developed macular schisis and a separate area of retinoschisis nasal to her optic disk. There were no other identifiable causes for her retinoschisis. Glaucoma related structural defects offer a plausible...
THE concept of an association between congenital syphilitic interstitial keratitis and the development of late glaucoma is not new. Hutchinson (1863) reported the case of a man aged 24 with congenital syphilis who had suffered bilateral interstitial keratitis at the age of 6; both eyes had deeply cupped and atrophic optic discs and iridectomy failed to control the glaucoma. Hutchinson believed ...
The authors describe a case of progressive optic neuropathy in a patient with congenital glaucoma who had routinely practiced the Sirsasana (headstand) yoga posture for several years. Ophthalmic examination included best-corrected visual acuity, anterior segment examination, indirect ophthalmoscopy, ultrasound pachymetry for central corneal thickness, and intraocular pressure before, during, an...
PURPOSE To identify myocilin (MYOC) and cytochrome P450, family 1, subfamily B, polypeptide 1 (CYP1B1) mutations in a Spanish population with different clinical forms of familial glaucoma or ocular hypertension (OHT). METHODS Index patients from 226 families participated in this study. Patients were diagnosed with familial glaucoma or OHT by complete ophthalmologic examination. Screening for ...
Superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia (SSOH) is a congenital anomaly of the optic nerve that is commonly misdiagnosed as normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and/or juvenile open angle glaucoma (JOAG). We demonstrate the utility of SD-OCT in assessing the structure-function correlation when differentiating between SSOH and JOAG.
This paper reports the occurrence of retinal detachment in 18 patients suffering from congenital glaucoma. Difficulty in establishing control of the glaucoma and the presence of high myopia were common findings. The poor results of detachment surgery were related to opacites in the media preventing evaluation of the renal details and the development of massive preretinal retraction.
CYP1B1 is a dioxin-inducible enzyme belonging to the cytochrome P450 superfamily. It has been observed to be important in a variety of developmental processes including in utero development of ocular structures. Owing to its role in the developmental biology of eye, its dysfunction can lead to ocular developmental defects. This has been found to be true and CYP1B1 mutations have been observed i...
BACKGROUND The strategy of pressure reducing surgery in primary congenital glaucoma has changed over the last decade. Ab externo filtering procedures--for example, trabeculectomy or trabeculotomy combined with trabeculectomy, have now been accepted even as primary intervention. METHODS The authors reviewed 61 eyes in 35 consecutive patients with primary congenital glaucoma, who underwent diff...
PURPOSE To quantify the long-term outcomes of congenital glaucoma and surgical success rates following pseudo 360-degree trabeculotomy surgery at Children's Medical Center in Dallas. PATIENTS AND METHODS An International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) database was utilized for a retrospective chart review. Thirty-eight eyes of 24 who underwent primary trabeculotomy with a pseudo 360-degre...
