Inspection of the rail state in order to detect defects is one of the basic tasks in railway maintenance. Rail defects exhibit different properties and are divided in various categories relating to the type and position of flaws on the rail. In this paper, we propose a technique, based on texture analysis of rail surface, to detect and classify a particular class of defects: corrugation.

The sliding energy landscape of the heterogeneous graphene/h-BN interface is studied by means of the registry index. For a graphene flake sliding on top of h-BN, the anisotropy of the sliding energy corrugation with respect to the misfit angle between the two naturally mismatched lattices is found to reduce with the flake size. For sufficiently large flakes, the sliding energy corrugation is ex...

To determine the relationship between the spatial channels for luminance and shape-from-stereo-disparity processing we measured disparity modulation sensitivity as a function of disparity spatial frequency for sinusoidal modulations of a field of Gabor micropatterns of differing luminance spatial frequency. We first examine the effects of contrast, spatial bandwidth and element density and show...

We demonstrate that a one-dimensional periodically corrugated metal film can be used to create planar terahertz (THz) waveguides. The periodic corrugation is in the form of rectangular blind holes (i.e. holes that do not completely perforate the metal film) that are fabricated using a multilayer construction. The approach allows for the creation of structures in which the hole depth can be more...

We report the development of corrugated slow-wave plasma guiding structures with application to quasiphase-matched direct laser acceleration of charged particles. These structures support guided propagation at intensities up to 2 1017 W/cm2, limited at present by our current laser energy and side leakage. Hydrogen, nitrogen, and argon plasma waveguides up to 1.5 cm in length with a corrugation ...

In this paper, we present a corrugation software features and its related development issues. Typically, in a paper corrugation factory, such a software is very important. The main features in the software is the paper roll inventory management and paper roll selection planning. The inventory management includes the stocking of the paper rolls. The roll selection plan involves creating a roll s...

Based on first principles density functional theory calculations we explored energetics of oxygen reduction reaction over pristine and nitrogen-doped graphene with different amounts of nitrogen doping. The process of oxygen reduction requires one more step than the same reaction catalyzed by metals. Results of calculations evidence that for the case of light doped graphene (about 4% of nitrogen...

The adult wing of Drosophila consists of two wing surfaces apposed by their basal membranes which first came into contact following disc eversion at metamorphosis. Veins appear in these surfaces in a dorsal-ventral symmetric pattern, but are 'corrugated' (vein cells are more compacted and more pigmented) in a dorsal-ventral asymmetric pattern. We prevented dorsal-ventral contact apposition duri...

The slip phenomena in thin polymer films confined by either flat or periodically corrugated surfaces are investigated by molecular dynamics and continuum simulations. For atomically flat surfaces and weak wall-fluid interactions, the shear rate dependence of the slip length has a distinct local minimum which is followed by a rapid increase at higher shear rates. For corrugated surfaces with wav...

We investigate the electronic and transport properties of gated bilayer graphene with one corrugated layer, which results in a stacking AB/BA boundary. When a gate voltage is applied to one layer, topologically protected gap states appear at the corrugation, which reveal as robust transport channels along the stacking boundary. With increasing size of the corrugation, more localized, quantum-we...
