Asking questions is widely believed to contribute to student learning, but little is known about the questions that students ask or how to exploit them in tutorial interventions to help students learn. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of student questions from an introductory computer science course, logged automatically when students requested help during open lab consulting hours. T...

In this paper we report the results obtained in the Semantic Textual Similarity (STS) task, with a system primarily developed for textual entailment. Our results are quite promising, getting a run ranked 39 in the official results with overall Pearson, and ranking 29 with the Mean metric.

We present an approach to scoring candidate utterances in a large repository of short text conversation (STC) data to select those to be used as a suitable response to a newly given utterance. Candidate utterances are evaluated based on the suitability of a dialogue-act and the content similarity. The estimation of the suitability of a dialogue-act is implemented by learning the trend of a dial...

We study encodings from CSP into asynchronous CCS with name passing and matching, so in fact, the asynchronous π-calculus. By doing so, we discuss two different ways to map the multi-way synchronisation mechanism of CSP into the two-way synchronisation mechanism of CCS. Both encodings satisfy the criteria of Gorla except for compositionality, as both use an additional top-level context. Followi...

Identifying protein targets for a bioactive compound is critical in drug discovery. Molecular similarity is a main approach to fish drug targets, and is based upon an axiom that similar compounds may have the same targets. The molecular structural similarity of a compound and the ligand of a known target can be gauged in topological (2D), steric (3D) or static (pharmacophoric) metric. The topol...

This paper is a natural extension of our previous work on gender-independent speaker verification systems [1]. In a previous paper, we presented a solution to avoid using gender information in the Probabilistic Linear Discriminant Analysis (PLDA) without any loss of accuracy compared with a genderdependent base-line implementation. In this work, we propose two solutions to make a speaker verifi...

Abstract: This paper proposes a method for retrieving similar question articles from Web bulletin boards, which basically use the cosine similarity index derived from a user’s query sentence and article question sentences. Since these sentences are mostly short, it is difficult to distinguish whether article question sentences are similar to a user’s query sentence or not simply by applying the...

Vector filters based on order-statistics have proved successful in removing impulsive noise from color images while preserving edges and fine image details. Among these filters, the ones that involve the cosine distance function (directional filters) have particularly high computational requirements, which limits their use in time critical applications. In this paper, we introduce two methods t...

We prove that Ochiai similarity of the co-occurrence matrix is equal to cosine similarity in the underlying occurrence matrix. Neither the cosine nor the Pearson correlation should be used for the normalization of co-occurrence matrices because the similarity is then normalized twice, and therefore over-estimated; the Ochiai coefficient can be used instead. Results are shown using a small matri...
