BACKGROUND Although both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and diarrhea are considerable problems in Cambodia, there have not been any studies to determine the history, clinical presentation, and etiology of chronic diarrhea in patients with HIV infection in Cambodia. Inoculation of adult, female BALB/c mice with 2 X 10(5) bleach-treated Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts isolated from calf feces resulted in infection of the uterine mucosa in more than 50% of the animals. Cryptosporidium sp. completed the entire life cycle in the uterus, and infectious oocysts were passed into the vagina. Two methods of application were used to establish intrauterine infection. The...

We describe a 68-year-old woman with an episode of diarrhoea, malaise and weight loss, caused by infection with Cryptosporidium. The diagnosis was hampered because this patient had a low risk of HIV infection, a two-year history of Crohn's disease, and a simultaneous candidal infection. An infection with Cryptosporidium was demonstrated with electron microscopic examination, and subsequent test...

A 298-bp region of the Cryptosporidium parvum 18S rRNA gene and a 390-bp region of the acetyl coenzyme A synthetase gene were sequenced for a range of Cryptosporidium isolates from wild house mice (Mus domesticus), a bat (Myotus adversus), and cattle from different geographical areas. Previous research has identified a distinct genotype, referred to as the "mouse"-derived Cryptosporidium genoty...

This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in pigs which were being raised in intensive management systems. Faecal samples were collected from pigs of all age groups from three different piggery units. Samples were collected directly from the rectum for piglets and weaners and from the floor within 2 min - 5 min of excretion for sows ...

BACKGROUND Cryptosporidiosis in dogs has been reported worldwide, involving both asymptomatic and diarrheic dogs. Large-scale surveys of Cryptosporidium infection in dogs have been performed in some countries using different diagnostic methods. But, few data are available on the infection rate and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium spp. in dogs in China. RESULT In this study, 770 fe...

Using DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, we identified four distinct Cryptosporidium genotypes in HIV-infected patients: genotype 1 (human), genotype 2 (bovine) Cryptosporidium parvum, a genotype identical to C. felis, and one identical to a Cryptosporidium sp. isolate from a dog. This is the first identification of human infection with the latter two genotypes.
