background : the protozoan parasites cryptosporidium spp. and giardia are known to occur widely in both raw and drinking waters. they are two of the causative agents of waterborne out-breaks of gastroenteritis throughout the world. in the present study, a pcr assay and fa were developed for detection of cryptosporidium oocysts and giardia cyst in environmental samples. methods : we have detecte...

Immunomagnetic separation (IMS) has been specified as a standard method for the measurement of Cryptosporidium in some countries. In this study, the IMS method was evaluated on the basis of the recovery efficiencies of Cryptosporidium oocysts at various IMS operation conditions. The average recovery for different Cryptosporidium concentrations in deionized water was 82.6 +/- 18.2% (n = 52). No ...

Background Protecting drinking water supplies from pathogens such as Cryptosporidium parvum is a major concern for water utilities worldwide. The sensitivity and specificity of current detection methods are largely determined by the effectiveness of the concentration and separation methods used. The purpose of this study is to develop micromixers able to specifically isolate and concentrate Cry...

A method was developed to obtain purified cryptosporidium oocysts from fecal samples. Oocysts were initially collected by centrifugation through a sucrose density gradient and further purified by passage through glass bead columns. The purified oocysts were antigenically active and sufficiently pure for immunological studies.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium (Apicomplexa, Cryptosporidiidae) in the snake Crotalus durissus terrificus (Serpentes, Viperidae). Fifty animals were evaluated for the presence of oocysts of Cryptosporidium sp. at the time of arrival and 30 and 60 days later. Intestinal washings with saline solution (1% body weight), fecal samples, and org...

Cryptosporidium parasite has gained an attention as an emerging pathogen in the last few decades. It is a zoonotic and is transmitted via the fecal-oral route; this has been implicated as one of the more important opportunistic infections in patients with Acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The results showed the presence of Cryptosporidium oocyst in fecal of sheep (11.1 and 22.2%), goats (15....

This study evaluated clams as bioindicators of fecal protozoan contamination using three approaches: (i) clam tissue spiking experiments to compare several detection techniques; (ii) clam tank exposure experiments to evaluate clams that had filtered Cryptosporidium oocysts from inoculated water under a range of simulated environmental conditions; (iii) sentinel clam outplanting to assess the di...

When filter-feeding shellfish are consumed raw, because of their ability to concentrate and store waterborne pathogens, they are being increasingly associated with human gastroenteritis and have become recognized as important pathogen vectors. In the shellfish industry, UV depuration procedures are mandatory to reduce pathogen levels prior to human consumption. However, these guidelines are bas...

An aquatic biomonitoring of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in river water corresponding to five villages situated in three states in peninsular Malaysia was determined. There were 51.3% (20/39) and 23.1% (9/39) samples positive for Giardia and Cryptosporidium (oo)cysts, respectively. Overall mean concentration between villages for Giardia cysts ranged from 0.10 to 25.80 cysts/l whils...
