Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection of humans has been associated with the development of lymphoid malignancies mainly of B-cell lineage, although occasionally T-cell lymphomas have been reported. We describe here the characterization of a novel EBV-like virus (HV(MNE)) isolated from a simian T-cell lymphotropic virus type I/II (STLV-I/II) seronegative pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) with ...

Skin diseases ranging from infective dermatitis to cutaneous lymphoma have been associated with human T cell leukemia virus (HTLV) type I. A generalized exfoliative papillated dermatopathy occurred in a rabbit 20 months into a course of chronic HTLV-I infection. Biopsies revealed epidermotropic T cell infiltrates, including Sezary-like cells, that resulted in a pattern mimicking cutaneous T cel...

Simian T-lymphotropic retroviruses with structural, antigenic, and cytopathic features similar to the etiologic agent of human acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, human T-lymphotropic virus type III/lymphadenopathy-associated virus (HTLV-III/LAV), have been isolated from a variety of primate species including African green monkeys (STLV-IIIAGM). This report describes nucleic acid cross-reactivi...

Three licensed and three research human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) enzyme immunoassay (EIA) kits were evaluated with a panel of 213 serum or plasma samples which were previously tested by the indirect immunofluorescence method for HTLV-I and -II antibodies. The three research kits were found to be more sensitive and specific than the three licensed kits.

human t-cell lymphotropic virus (htlv) types 1 and 2 belong to the oncorna group of retroviridae, a large family of viruses, grouped initially by pathogenic features, but later revised on the basis of genome structure and nucleotide sequence. htlv-i was the first discovered human retrovirus to be associated with a malignancy in 1980. the malignancy, first described by uchiyama and co-workers in...

Introduction The discovery in 1980 of the first human retrovirus (1), the human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I), inaugurated a new era in human pathology. Two conditions were promptly associated with this retroviral infection (2): adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP). Thus, this discovery solved a longlasting enigma in tropical medicine, the cause of...
